plainclothes policemen

It is dangerous to go shopping in Hong Kong nowadays. Shoppers risk being arrested by the police for acting suspiciously and buying things that could be used as weapons. That’s why I think twice (think carefully) about going shopping nowadays. I do not want to be trailed by plainclothes policemen who suddenly corner me and arrest me for buying a dangerous weapon. If you “act suspiciously”, it means you are behaving in a way that makes others, such as the police, believe you are guilty of something illegal. The word “trail” has many meanings but used this way it means to secretly follow someone. Plainclothes policemen are policemen who wear ordinary clothes instead of uniforms. To corner someone means to force someone into a place where he cannot escape.

Last week, plainclothes policemen trailed, cornered, and arrested Baptist University student union president Keith Fong Chung-yin for acting suspiciously in Apliu Street. They searched his shopping bag and found ten laser pointers. Fong Chung-yin, who has now been released, said he bought the laser pointers for stargazing, which means to look at the stars. But the police said they were laser guns that could be used to damage the eyes of police during protests. At a press conference last week, the police said they could arrest anyone who acted suspiciously after buying something that could be used as a weapon. That’s why I think twice about shopping because the police say many things have been used as weapons at protests.

Protesters have used umbrellas to protect themselves from pepper spray and teargas, and to hit police who attack them. Protesters have also thrown eggs and water bottles at police. Would I be arrested when buying an umbrella if the police think I am acting suspiciously? I do not know how the police decide whether or not a person is acting suspiciously. That’s why I am afraid to buy umbrellas, eggs, and water bottles. Eggs are full of cholesterol anyway. Plastic water bottles are bad for the environment. And I don’t need umbrellas because I love getting wet in the rain.

Michael, if you buy only one any of your mentioned items in your this article, I do think police has no excuse to arrest you.  Will you buy ten umbrellas or knives at a time? It would be ok if you can give your explanation.  If I were the head of student union and told you I got ten high power laser pointers to view stars at a time, I think only morons will believe my explanation.  I have been reading your articles for over three years but this is my first time to feel very dissappointed you wrote such nonsense article this time.
