"While a different story, and with respect to many friends I have in Northern Ireland whose opinions I value, I can't help feeling there are many parallels with the current situation here in Hong Kong (as regards democracy protests and in my opinion some worthwhile demands) and with those of 50 years ago in Northern Ireland.

Having experienced the taste of tear gas in a complete over the top police response in Sham Shui Po , and considering how things went in the airport two nights ago, I feel Hong Kong and all involved might benefit from being careful to not make the same mistakes that lead to years of trouble and pointless bloodshed."
