One of the most popular sitcoms on American television was the 1970s television series All in the Family. It was a sitcom that mixed comedy with sensitive issues such as politics, racism, and religion. YouTube has many of the episodes. Sometimes, when I want to laugh and relax, I watch one or two episodes in the evening with a glass of wine. A sitcom is a shortened word for situation comedy. A situation comedy is a funny television or radio series with the same people in every episode. The sitcom All in the Family is about a working-class father and his family who live in a modest (ordinary, simple) house in New York.

The four main characters are Archie Bunker, his wife Edith, his daughter Gloria and her husband Michael. Gloria and Michael live in Archie's house to save money. Almost every episode is about the four of them at home. Edith is mostly in the kitchen cooking. Archie, who has conservative political views, is always arguing with his daughter and son-in-law who both have liberal views. Archie's wife Edith is kind but naïve and uneducated. Archie always insults her by calling her dingbat. The American slang word "dingbat" means an idiot or a stupid person. Edith doesn't dare get angry when her husband calls her a "dingbat" but her daughter Gloria often scolds her father for insulting her mother.

Archie feels his son-in-law is lazy because Gloria works to support him while he goes to university. Archie always insults Michael by calling him "meathead". This American slang word was made popular by Archie in the sitcom. The word "meathead" is similar to "dingbat" and means an idiot. Other similar slang words are "blockhead" and "bonehead". Some of the episodes reminded me of the political quarrels among family members in Hong Kong caused by the extradition bill. Many families in Hong Kong nowadays are divided along political lines. Some support the government, the police, and China while others oppose the government, the police, and China.
