at loggerheads

Hong Kong and Singapore have, for many years, tried to outshine each other as Asia's best city. Many people are at loggerheads over which city is better. I was in Singapore two weeks ago to compare it with Hong Kong. Some people say Singapore is now outshining Hong Kong because of the anti-government protests here. I wanted to see for myself if this was true. When Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok Airport opened in 1998, many people were at loggerheads over whether it outshone Singapore's Changi Airport. To outshine someone or something means to be much better than or more successful than others. If you are at loggerheads with someone, it means you disagree strongly with that person.

Hong Kong Airport had a bizarre (strange and unusual) feel when I arrived there by the Airport Express. It was bizarre because security staff checked my passport and boarding pass before allowing me into the airport. The departure hall, which is usually buzzing (busy and full of activity) was quiet and half empty. The arrival hall was even more bizarre. It was empty aside from arriving passengers. Cathay Pacific's Pier Lounge, which I like to use, was almost empty. The Cathay plane was half empty, which saddened me because Cathay is a Hong Kong icon which we should support during these troubled times.

Singapore's Changi Airport was buzzing when I arrived there. When I went to Changi for my return flight, I specifically went to terminal one to see The Jewel, which recently opened, even though my flight was in terminal four. Jewel Changi is awesome (extremely impressive). You have to see it to believe it. Its 130-foot waterfall is the world's largest and tallest indoor waterfall. The Jewel is like a rain forest inside a huge shopping mall with sky trains connecting it to other terminals. There is no need to be at loggerheads over whether Changi or Chek Lap Kok is better. Changi outshines Chek Lap Kok. I think Singapore, with its friendly taxi drivers and relaxed lifestyle, outshines Hong Kong. But as a Hong Kong person, I still support Hong Kong.
