Al fresco

          Hong Kong's spectacular harbour is perfect for al fresco dining. With the coronavirus still lingering in Hong Kong, al fresco makes good sense. It is part of the culture in many European countries, such as Italy and France. But our government has strict rules against al fresco dining although it is now allowing some areas to have it. The Italian word "al fresco" means "in the cool" or "in the fresh" air. But it has also become an English word that means eating outdoors. Experts say it is safer to eat outdoors because the lingering coronavirus doesn't spread easily outdoors.

          The word "spectacular" means beautiful or exciting to look at. The word "lingering" means lasting a long time. I live in Tseung Kwan O, where many restaurants have recently started al fresco dining across from the waterfront park. I walk along the waterfront almost daily for fresh air and exercise. I recently saw a restaurant near the waterfront called Pizza Pig. It made me smile because the name is imaginative. It reminded me of the expression "pig out", which means to eat a lot. I don't often eat pizza but when I do, I like to pig out on pizza. I invited a friend to go to Pizza Pig on a Saturday night.

          We were lucky to get the last available table, which was partly al fresco. We started with a platter (large plate for food) of different types of cheese, cold cuts, and salad. Cold cuts are different types of thin, flat slices of cooked cold meats such as ham. I love cheese but what impressed my Hong Kong friend most was the burrata. My friend had never eaten it before. Burrata is a ball-shaped Italian cow's milk cheese made with cream and mozzarella cheese. The outside is semi-solid but inside is almost like liquid. It is delicious with bread. We ate the cheese platter and pizza with martinis, my favourite drink. The Pizza Pig burrata is authentic (real, genuine). Some supermarkets also sell it. Try it!

          香港那壯麗的(spectacular)海港,實在是露天(al fresco)用膳的絕佳場景。新冠肺炎疫情在香港持續不退(lingering),露天(al fresco)用餐實在非常合適。這是許多歐洲國家如意大利和法國的文化之一,但我們的政府卻以嚴厲的法規阻攔露天(al fresco)用膳,即使它現在已容許某些地區設置露天餐飲。意大利語“al fresco”是指在清涼(in the cool)或清新(in the fresh)的空氣中;但它也變成了英語,是指戶外進膳。專家指,在戶外進食更安全,因為這個歷久不散(lingering)的新冠病毒在戶外不會那麼容易傳播。

          Spectacular一字是指壯觀的、引人注目的。Lingering則指持續、徘徊了很長時間的。我住在將軍澳,那裏有很多餐廳最近都開始在對着海濱公園的地方設置戶外(al fresco)餐飲區。我差不多每天都會沿着海旁散步,呼吸新鮮空氣和做運動。我最近見到海旁附近有間餐廳叫Pizza Pig。這令我會心微笑,因為這個名字很富想像力。它令我想到習語“pig out”,意即狼吞虎嚥地大吃大喝。我不常吃薄餅,但我吃的話,也會大口大口的猛吃(pig out)薄餅。一個周六的晚上,我邀請了一位朋友一起去Pizza Pig吃晚餐。

          我們很幸運,拿到最後一張桌子入座,是半露天的(al fresco)。我們以一大盤(platter)前菜開始,有不同種類的芝士、cold cuts和沙律。Cold cuts就是什錦冷盤,有已熟的薄薄冷切肉,例如火腿。我喜愛芝士,但最令我那位香港朋友印象深刻的,卻是那個布拉塔芝士(burrata),我的朋友從未吃過。Burrata是用忌廉和水牛芝士製成的球狀意大利牛奶芝士,其外殼是半固體的,內裏卻像液體般柔軟,配搭麵包吃,味道一流。我們以我最喜愛的馬天尼,來搭配那芝士拼盤(platter)和薄餅。Pizza Pig的布拉塔芝士(burrata)實在地道(authentic)得很。一些超級市場亦有售布拉塔芝士,大家不妨試試!mickchug@gmail.com
