Whenever I eat lunch in a restaurant, I ask for hot water. I rarely ask for soft drinks. If I eat dinner in a restaurant, I ask for a hard drink and hot water. When I am at home, I have a hard drink or wine with dinner. On rare occasions I mix my hard drink with a soft drink. I drink hot water while I am writing columns. As you know, a soft drink is a carbonated drink such as Coca Cola. Hard drinks, sometimes called hard liquor, include gin, vodka, and whiskey. Beer and wine are not hard drinks. Americans usually say soda, soda pop, or pop instead of soft drink.

Last week I received something very unusual – two four-packs of Coca Cola. A four-pack means a pack of four cans. Beer often comes in a pack of six. When people say a six-pack, they mean a pack of six beer cans. The Swire Group has the exclusive rights to market Coca Cola in Hong Kong. At first I wondered why anyone would deliver two four-packs of Coca Cola to my home. When I looked at the cans I realized they were not ordinary Coke. One four-pack had a coffee and chocolate flavour. The other had a coffee and caramel flavour. I was intrigued. I decided to try them because the Cokes were sugar-free and made with real Brazilian coffee.

The word “intrigued” used this way means you consider something very interesting or unusual. It is intriguing that Swire can market Coke in Hong Kong with a coffee, chocolate, or caramel flavour. I tried both flavours. My doctor told me to avoid chocolate or coffee because of my digestive problems but I had to “go for it”. The expression “go for it” used this way means to do something you normally would not do. I loved the taste of the new Coke. If you have a sweet tooth, you should try it. The expression “sweet tooth” means liking sweet things such as chocolate. Even though the new Coke is sugar-free, it still tastes like chocolate. Go for it!

即管一試吧(go for it)!
