While in the 1990s, Jacklean Davis seemed to be a policing superstar, hailed as the best crime solver within the city. But a dispute turned into a major federal situation against her, brought by a prosecutor whose conduct throughout other cases was referred to as ‘grotesque’
n 22 Feb 2002, Sgt Jacklean Davis was with a walk with her boss, Lt Samuel Lee, when Lee got a call from other commander at the 7th district in New Orleans. “The commander inquired him if he believed my whereabouts, and they said, ‘Yeah, she’s the following, we’re walking, ’” Davis remembers.
“I need you to return back to the residence, ” Davis recalls the particular commander telling Lee. “You’re gonna be arrested. And certainly, when we pulled up to Sam’s residence, they possessed four black cars and two police units. Four black cars to the FBI agents. ”
To get more than seven months, the brand new Orleans police department’s Public Integrity Bureau, the FBI, and the US attorney with the eastern district of Louisiana have been investigating Davis and Lee over allegations that they extorted several Florida promoters who hired them to work a paid detail in the course of an Essence festival affair on 7 July 2001. A NEW paid detail is off-duty, sometimes highly paid improve police officers, and Essence is surely an annual event that is now a Black cultural institution since first festival in 1995, getting acts like Beyoncé, Mary J Blige and Prince towards city.
Davis’s arrest effectively concluded her 20-year career using the NOPD. She was not simply a veteran officer but the first Black womans homicide detective in Fresh Orleans’ history.
For decades, Davis was celebrated inside newspaper and magazine profiles which include Ebony, which in May 1991 asked, “Is Jackie Davis the best homicide detective in Innovative Orleans’ history? ” From a February 1992 profile for that Philadelphia Inquirer that also appeared in the Chicago Tribune – “Next stop Hollywood? The stunning your life of New Orleans’ major cop” – Davis was hailed for solving 88 involving her 90 homicide circumstances, “a record better than every other detective and all the greater impressive for the first black woman to join crowd corps of mostly light men who prodded the woman to fail”.
The piece also mentioned Hollywood interest in Davis’s story from superstars like Whoopi Goldberg (none which came to fruition). Following Davis’s arrest, federal indictment, and conviction from the early 2000s, a career that had shattered the revolutionary Orleans PD’s racial and also gender norms collapsed to the dustbin of history.
