The toes of most shoes, especially sneakers, bend extremely slightly upward. While that curve, called a bottom spring, can make walking easier plus more comfortable, it may also weaken feet and potentially open them as long as some common (and painful) foot-related injuries.

That’s the conclusion achieved by Harvard evolutionary biologist Daniel E. Lieberman, his former undergraduate pupil Oliver B. Hansen ’19, and two former postdoctoral analysts, Freddy Sichting and Nicholas B. Holowka, who studied toe springs and their impact on the biomechanics of running.

The scientists found that the more curved a bottom spring is, the less power the foot included in the shoe has to have to put out when pushing off on the ground while walking. Imagine foot muscles are accomplishing less work, and this kind of, the researchers hypothesize, may have consequences.

“It stands to reason that that the foot muscles are related less work, then they’re likely to have less endurance considering the fact that many thousands of times a day you push off against your toes, ” said Lieberman, that Edwin M. The researchers say this potential weakness will make people more susceptible to health conditions like plantar fasciitis — a standard, hard to repair, and painful inflammation from the thick, web-like band of material that connects the heel bone on the toes.
“One of the biggest problems nowadays of people’s feet is definitely plantar fasciitis, ” Lieberman claimed. “We think that how are you affected is that people are banking on their plantar fascia to undertake what muscles normally carry out. When you get weak muscles plus the plantar fascia has to do more work, it’s really not evolved for that therefore it gets inflamed. ”

The scientists say their next step is to validate their hypothesis within future studies.

“From a great evolutionary perspective, wearing modern shoes who have arch supports, cushioning, and other supportive features is an extremely recent phenomenon, ” reported Sichting, who’s now some sort of post-doctoral researcher and school assistant in human locomotion from Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany and has been the paper’s first creator. “Several lines of data suggest that weak foot muscles may be partly as a result of such features. In some of our research, we were interested within a nearly ubiquitous element of modern shoes that is not studied before: the upward curvature at the front of the shoe. ”

The project started immediately after Sichting and Lieberman met with a conference in Boston, and (of course) went for a run by the Charles Lake, during which they described foot biomechanics and plantar fasciitis. That resulted in Sichting coming to Lieberman’s Skeletal Biology as well as Biomechanics Lab in 2018 to figureout on the project by using Holowka, who’s now an helper professor of anthropology for the University of Buffalo, along with Hansen, a former Crimson rower who graduated that has a concentration in human evolutionary biology. Hansen worked on the paper as part of his senior honor’s thesis.

In the experiment, 13 participants walked barefoot in addition to in four pairs of custom-made sandals for a specially designed treadmill with force plates and a strong infrared camera system to measure simply how much power is put in each step.
