Small beer

Many Hong Kong people may not know the meaning of "small beer". A Western commentator used it last week when he described the current frosty relations between the US and Russia. He said frosty relations is "small beer" compared to the Cold War between the US-led West and the former Soviet Union. The British expression "small beer" means something or someone that is not important when compared to something or someone else. Even if you have US$10 billion, you are small beer compared to business tycoon Li Ka-shing who has over US$34 billion. A tycoon is a very rich and powerful person. Similar words are "magnate" or "mogul".

Li Ka-shing is small beer compared to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, who has US$180 billion. Most Hong Kong people will know the meaning of "small potatoes". It is the American version of "small beer". The word "frosty", when describing the weather, means very cold with a thin covering of ice. But when describing a person's behaviour, it means cold and unfriendly. The expression "frosty relations" therefore means very unfriendly relations. The US and China now have frosty relations. When the commentator said today's frosty relationship between the US and Russia is small beer compared to the Cold War, he meant the Cold War between the US-led West and the former Soviet Union was far more dangerous and important than the frosty relations today between the US and Russia.

During the Cold War, both sides lived in fear of a nuclear war. But today, although both sides still fear a nuclear war, they know it will end in mutual assured destruction, which means both sides will be destroyed. The Cantonese expression "laam chow" became popular during the 2019 protests. The protesters used the expression "if we burn, you burn with us" from the Hunger Games movies to say if you destroy us, we will destroy you too. They turned this expression into "laam chow". There is no exact English equivalent of "laam chow" but mutual (both sides) destruction is the closest.

mickchug@gmail.com
