I have been heavily criticised the bad service in New Tsui Wah (新翠華) in CWB. But that doesn't mean that I leave the yummy rice in casserole as well. I've heard of the big name of Wing Hap Shing for a long time. However, the timing didn't match. Recently (i am talking about 2 months ago), the rare chance finally came to me.

Environment:
Its size is quite big (with ground floor and a mezzanine floor) when talking about a normal "cha chan tang". The owner does not give much attention to the interior decoration. BTW, we didn't expect an elegantly decorated restaurant. The purpose of this visit is the famous rice casserole.

Taste:
In fact, Wing Hap Shing has been introduced once in one TVB programme (with Kathy Chow). Normally, rice in casserole is heated up in a primitive charcoal stove before it is served. In this way, we can obtain "burnt rice" (fan jiu). But at the same time, the whole rice in the casserole may not be cooked with even heat. This gives you an inhomogeneous rice, i.e. overdone near the casserole (fan jiu) and just made in the middle. Instead of using charcoal stove, Wing Hap Shing uses oven to "bake" the whole rice casserole. The casserole is first wrapped up with aluminium foil. This ensures that the rice inside casserole can receive even heat. Although "fan jiu" is sacrificed in this method of baking, the whole rice gives you a more consistent texture. The sauce in Wing Hap Shing adds colour to the rice casserole. When I spread the sauce onto the rice, the smell of the sauce was carried by the stream from the rice. It's a very good stimulus to your salivary gland. The tea with milk is a surprise for me. For poor tea, your teeth surface will become rough after drinking. The tea here was smooth accompanying with a suitable amount of milk. The taste of milk was well fused with the taste of tea. A smiley for this.

Service:
The opening hours are abnormal to me. It closes at 7:00PM every day and it is not open on Sunday. So you can't have rice casserole on a freezing night or a pleasant and enjoyable Sunday afternoon. Too bad!!

Price:
It's reasonable.

Cleanliness:
It's okay on the ground floor but below my standard on the mezzanine floor.

Location: 113 - 115 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan
