Has Wenger had a Carling Cup re-think?

Who will Arsenal play in the next round of the Carling Cup?

I've got a funny feeling it will be somebody interesting.

Last night's game should never have gone to extra time.

A vibrant first half performance was good enough to have swept Spurs away but Arsenal were only 1-0 up at half-time.

Kieran Gibbs was phenomenal last night: lightning quick, super-competitive and very skilful. His injury is terrible news. He limped off in extra time and may have cracked a toe. Hope not. Arsenal really need Gibbs right now. If the scan shows he's got another metatarsal, he could be out for months.

Arsenal's collective game, their slick, fast passing and support running, meant that Spurs could not get the ball or do anything. It looked like a night that would vindicate Wenger's style of play and his training methods.

The early goal was a hammer blow for the home side. Sweet move in 15minutes, fabulous low cross from Wilshere, Henri Lansbury ran in to score from three yards. This game was his first start for Arsenal !

Robbie Keane and Aaron Lennon came on at half-time and Keane was just offside when he took Kyle Naughton's pass and hit an average shot which the diving Fabianski should have saved. No flag and 1-1.

Sky pundit Glenn Hoddle said Robbie Keane d ropped back and stopped Jack Wilshere playing for 20 minutes. We could not see that through TV's keyhole.

In extra time, two penalties by Nasri and the coup de grace from Arshavin, who drilled a left foot shot across third choice keeper Stipe Plestikoska for 4-1 to the Arsenal.
Arshavin had been fouled, the defender switched off, Wilshere slipped the ball forward to the Russian and ...bang!

Kosielny was composed and crucial in the first half hour and used the ball very well.

In 70 he made a terrific tackle on Lennon in the box when the score was 1-1.

Glory-hunting David Bentley was just pitiful. But he beat the rusty Djourou too easily

Carlos Vela? Why is he there? I don't get it. I never have. What does he bring to the table?

In 54, Wilshere was fouled by Bassong and a free-kick was given outside the box. I wrote down : Vela FK was pants. I wrote that before Vela hit the ball over the bar.

Overall, a really entertaining game, even better than I thought it would be. It was compelling. Arsenal won the first half, lost the second half,  romped it in extra time.

Before last night, Arsenal's record at the Lane was not good. They'd only won two of their last 13 games there.

Didn't preview it because I had no idea what teams Wenger and Redknapp would pick.

I haven't been writing any previews this season. But one of my readers says I've GOT to preview the Chelsea game. It's always nice to be told what I should be doing. I always react well to that.

Nobody could have predicted Wenger would s elect such experienced starters and subs.

TOTTENHAM (4-1-4-1): Pletikosa; Naughton, Caulker, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto; Sandro (Kranjcar, 96); Livermore (Lennon, h-t), Palacios, Dos Santos (Keane, h-t), Bentley; Pavlyuchenko. Subs not used Cudicini (gk) Hutton, Huddlestone, Jenas.

ARSENAL: (4-4-1-1): Fabianksi; Eboué, Koscielny, Djourou, Gibbs (Clichy, 102); Lansbury, Denilson, Wishere, Rosicky (Chamakh, 73); Nasri; Vela (Arshavin, 73). Subs not used Almunia (gk), Sagna, Eastmond, Emmanuel-Thomas.

Wenger: 'We can go for this competition too'

on dedicating the game to Jack Chester...
First I would like to dedicate this game to Jack Chester, a young boy who was last year the figurehead of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity, he did the press conferences with us. He died last Wednesday so I would like to have a thought for him tonight because he was in full power at the start, he made the full team photo with us. Unfortunately he had a resurgence of his cancer.

on the performance...
The game was enjoyable. We played well in the first half but we were only one goal in front and after that Tottenham came back. We were for a few minutes a little bit in danger but slowly we took over again and in the final 20 minutes it looked that would could score, but we didn't. Then we got these two penalties which in my opinion were penalties and that was the turning point of the game. But overall we played very well.

on the strength of the team...
We got a few reproaches that we didn't take the competition seriously, that it was a derby, it was the start of a competition and to go out straight away would be difficult. We have a momentum going and it is sometimes important not to interrupt it. Some players needed competition like Gibbs, Denilson and Vela. Overall that was the reason.

on whether his selection was a one-off...
I don't know yet. It depends as well on the injuries, we had so many players out today. When you look at the players we left at home, when everybody's fit I can go as well for this competition. It depends.

on Gibbs' injury...
We have to check. That is the only disappointment of the night because he had a very good game and we hope we do not get bad news tomorrow morning. It is a metatarsal again but the one next to the one he had broken. The second metatarsal. That would be a massive blow to us.

on accepting the FA charge...
I accepted it because what I was charged with I did so I could not deny it, so that's why I took it. I could appeal but I thought it was better to get it behind me. It was quite enjoyable to watch from upstairs.

on communicating with the bench...
It was a bit of a problem sometimes but overall it went well.

on his opinion of the Carling Cup...
I said before that the two big competitions that really count are the Champions League and the championship and I maintain that. But it doesn't mean that I do not celebrate when we win games. I want to win every single game I play with my team.

on Jack Wilshere...
He was outstanding. I am a bit cautious with him because you do not want to get too quickly too early all the praise. In the first half I think he has shown a little bit of everything you want from a football player. He got some stick and he could take it, he didn't respond. He played, tackled, won the ball and tactically his position on the pitch was always good. He had an outstanding first half. He is fearless.

on the Tottenham goal...
I need to see it again. He touched it and he looked like he had it. Apart from the goal he had a good game, his decision-making was good, he had not too many shots to stop but overall it is good for him that we won.

on Henri Lansbury...
He has not played for a long time and he is a bit like Ray Parlour - up and down, fantastic engine, good attitude. He smells when you have to be in the box. He is a player who is always in there when a cross is coming in from the other side. He always scores goals.

Wilshere and Szczesny give Arsenal far more authority and guts

By Myles Palmer

Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

Villa 26, Van Persie 78, Arshavin 83

____________________________

The key player in the Nou Camp will be Szczesny.

So pray that nothing happens to Arsenal’s goalkeeper between now and Tuesday, March 8th.

Barcelona’s style is cleverly-timed runs onto sharp little passes, which c reates a lot of one-on-one chances with the keeper.

Wojciech Szczesny’s fine positional judgement makes him a master of making opponents shoot into the side-netting or just past the post.

On the goal, he was a bit unlucky because David Villa, a razor finisher in these situations, slotted between his legs.

By contrast, he got lucky on the loose ball after his save, when the scrambling Messi headed in but was flagged offside. Messi wasn't offside.

For me, Szczesny was Arsenal’s best player last night for that reason. Making Messi miss was the name of the game.

Yes, Koscielny played his finest game in an Arsenal shirt.

Yes, Jack Wilshere played with remarkable authority at the heart of the team. England need to play Jack football, Fabio - not Capello football.

Yes, of course, CL knock-out ties are a game of four halves.

Arsenal lost the first half 1-0 and won the second half 2-0 and halves three and four will roll round 20 days from now.

Arsenal raised their tempo after half-time and the game turned on 68 when Keita and Arshavin came on.

Keita replaced Villa to stiffen Barca's midfield, which was running out of steam, and allowed young Busquets to go ball-hunting further up the field.

Arshavin’s arrival (for Song) allowed him to link in a cool manner with Clichy, who played a killer ball forward into the box with his right-foot and gave Van Persie a chance to hit a mighty left-foot shot on the half- volley inside the near post of Victor Valdes for 1-1.

Valdes has always had flaky moments. That blunder by allowed Arsenal back into a game that Barcelona were still playing mostly in Arsenal's half.

Still, defending deeper can be good. You can only counter-attack if your opponents are in your half of the field. You can attack too much in a game. If you attack less, you often score more.

Frankly, Fabregas, Eboue and Walcott had been crap.

All three played crap. Only a blinkered, badge-kissing nincompoop would say any of those three played well last night.

Arsenal had nothing on the right flank but now, suddenly, that was where the winning goal came from after a fabulous move.

The cool Koscielny picked up the ball in his penalty area, passed to Bendtner, who passed infield to Wilshere, then quickly forward to Fabregas, who instantly released Nasri with a superb ball down the right flank.

Nasri could have tried the obvious with a low cross to the far post but chose instead to play a lovely pass which allowed Arshavin to curl his sidefoot shot behind Abidal and into the net from 15 yards.

That quality goal gave Arsenal their first victory against Barcelona and it set the seal on the pulsating, rocking, thrilling night that the Emirates has needed since 2006.

Sporting Gijon was a factor last night because game was much harder than the Wolves game was for Arsenal .

After two and half years of staggering success, and intensifying pressure, Barcelona are showing signs of burn-out, so Pep has to husband his resources very carefully.

Coming back off an international break, which is mostly where Barcelona d rop their points, he conceded an early goal at Gijon in a game that was very passionate, intense and physical, since Gijon are fighting for their lives just above the drop-zone.

I was really enjoying the game but as the second half went on I was thinking : This is taking a lot out of Barcelona !

Indeed, it was a helluva battle that was taking a lot out of both sides.

Just as the commentators began to say that David Villa was about to be taken off, he glided onto a wonder-pass from Messi and chipped the keeper from the edge of the box and it finished 1-1.

Success brings a heavy schedule.

The more games you win, the more the pressure is on you. To handle that you need character and guts. Wilshere and Szczesny have given the team a lot more personality and authority than it had last year.

Big characters, big difference.

As Rufus Thomas said, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
