《新聞透視》自1981年播映以來，至今已三十年，在過去超過1500集的節目中，探討過不少政策、現象和社會問題，部分問題今非昔比，有些卻不斷歷史重演，當中給予我們甚麼啟示？《新聞透視》會透過一連三集的特輯，解讀現今社會問題的來龍去脈。第一集首先看看，青年人在社會力爭上游的機會。
發奮上游，「獅子山下」的精神，經常被視為典型的香港成功故事。三十年前，不論學歷，不分階層，也可由低做起，沿社會階梯逐步攀升。當時香港發展製造業，工廠小工可自力更生，小販亦可搞小生意，年輕人可透過教育晉身社會重要職位，配合經濟起飛，港人在社會階梯間力爭上游。不過，隨著經濟轉型，經濟支柱由製造業轉為金融服務業，大量低技術低學歷工人被淘汰，即使取得學位的大學生，亦未必有好的就業和升遷機會。近年有評論指，「八十後」、「九十後」在社會階梯流動的機會不及往昔，三十年來，社會階梯的流動出現甚麼變化？上游是否越來越難？

For me, it appears that the present generation benefits from more readily available technology and the easy access to information and data, while suffers from lack of similar opportunities during the "golden" 70s-80s of Hong Kong.
My view is relatively simple: for the present generation to climb up the social ladder, two powers must be used: 1) physical power: to be persistent and hardworking; 2) brain power: to identify where the new opportunities arise and intelligently grasp the chance.
During the golden era of Hong Kong, purely hardworking may have already earned you a fortune. As Hong Kong socio-economic conditions changed drastically, we must combine the hardworking attitude with a new element: brain power.
