How to use 'online dictionary'

Today morning I was re-reading news about education and tried to translate some Chinese pieces into English. Although my aim was to prepare myself for an exam, the news provided clearer insights for me to narrow my assignment topic. I also learned how to live better with suggestions from experts, as quoted in the informative texts.

The laziest way to translate a passage would be using Babel Fish's website. Let's see how it could translate the first paragraph:

「今天早晨我再讀设法的新聞關於教育和翻译某些中國人片斷成英语。 雖然我的目標將為檢查做准备,新聞為我提供更加清楚的洞察使我的任務題目狹窄。 我在情報文本也學會了如何與從專家的建議更好居住,如被引述。」

Relatively incomprehensible. What I tried to say was:

This example is used to illustrate how translation tools on the internet could falsely interpret ideas expressed in another language. With the limitation of incorporating all definitions of words collected in thick paper-dictionaries, Yahoo's translation tool is still inadequate to do my translation. It is especially true when Chinese phrasal verbs appear in the news contents. What we need in such circumstance would be Yu-tang Lin's bilingual on-line dictionary.

When those three lazy ways could not cater for the need of particular words, Wikipedia and Baidu could lend you a great hand. For the former one, type in the Chinese word. After searching, click to it's English page. Okay, your English translation is there. The later one also provides thorough information about the words or phrases in Chinese. Within the 'Chinese' page, you could also find their concise English names.

When searching for the formal term of 'short-sightedness', I even went to an optical organisation's website. As long as you know what those words are related to, finding their meanings are not as difficult as your children think.

And now we have a good webpage that you could do a translation exercise with:

Anger management

'

  • Improve your problem solving skills. When faced with a difficult situation or conflict, learn as much as you can about it and think about what happened and identify all the feeling you are experiencing. Are you angry? Disappointed? Embarrassed? This will prevent you from making quick judgments that may be wrong. Remember, there are many ways to look at the same situation.
  • Take responsibility for your actions. You actually have the power to decide how you will behave in certain situations ahead of time if you find a way to "keep a cool head".
  • Think about the consequences of your behavior. Realize that how you behave affects not only you but also those you love and others around you.
  • Pay attention to what upsets you. When you are able to figure out what triggers angry feelings, you can make decisions about how to manage these triggers. Sometimes they are avoidable and other times not; it's up to you to be prepared with strategies that will help you stay in better control.
  • Pay attention to how your body feels when you are angry. Sometimes people are first aware of experiencing anger through their bodies rather than their thoughts or feelings. When you notice your body beginning to react, it's time to slow down and identify the feeing before reacting.'
