Typography and Others

 搵工,都要溫故知新呀~~~

I've got a pile of Desktop Publishing and typography notes. Some are from my associate degree in Bilingual Communication Studies, some are from evening courses I learned after getting into the society, and some are just from newspapers collected in the past. I haven't done newspaper cutting nor further practices about typography since I became an employee. However, my dream about working in artistic field, including being a graphic designer, has never vanished from my sincere heart.

Rereading the notes, vocabularies I did not know became more and more familiar. Some techniques I have learned, on the contrary, have been forgotten tragically. Basic concepts about design, such as colours, usage of shapes and graphics all rushed out from the deepest sea-trench of my brain. AIDA-- Attention, Interest, Desire, Action... Consistency, readability, language accuracy, uniqueness of the typography...

I can tell you the difference between a Marquee and a Lasso tool in the software named Photoshop-- after revising the notes. I can tell you PageMaker provides us frame templates for newsletters, but Illustrator does not, by my knowledge-- after revising the notes. I can tell you a PC can show graphics only with 96 dpi, while a MAC can show even less-- only 72 dpi. Printing requires high resolution, 300 for magazines and more for greater uses. Last but not least a home printer usually can only print out graphics with 150 dpi...I can tell you after revising the notes.

The sea of knowledge is so large without any cliffs. It does have rocks to block our ways though, called troubles and forgetting. The attributes of the sea's picture are nearly impossible to calculate by pixels nor inches... The resolution is as big as the universe. In Photoshop, 'you can change how many history undo steps the files saves by going to EDIT- PREFERENCES- GENERAL & changing "History States" to whatever you want, at least 250 is useful', but to human brain? Never-- this is why we should steadily revise old notes, including notes about your life.

Alt+g for a copyright symbol; Alt+r for a registered symbol; Alt+0153 for a 'TM' symbol... Save graphics as TIFF unless you only need to put them onto the web as GIF or JPG files. Raster image is never of better quality than a vector graphic, and saving it into an EPS(Encapsulated Post Script format) file is the greatest thing of the earth... Never lossy. Great, great!!! But I still need a 'URL'(Uniform Resource Locator)-- a job that can pay me for a living... After I've finished another portfolio of life for bundles of applications and interviews!
