When I saw the dishonest taxi drivers last Thursday morning, I also saw two policemen standing idly by. To stand idly by means to stand in a lazy and inactive way. I asked them politely in Cantonese why they were turning a blind eye to taxi drivers cheating passengers. To turn a blind eye means to pretend not to notice. One of the policemen replied that they were taking action against the drivers. I said if they were taking action, the dishonest taxi drivers would not still be waiting for passengers. The policeman got angry and asked if I wanted to make a complaint against the taxi drivers. He then demanded to see my identity card.
I asked him why he wanted to see my identity card when I had not done anything illegal. When I gave him my identity card, people passing by thought I was being stopped and searched. It made me very angry. Three young girls who recognized me as a TV host wanted to take pictures with me. It made me very embarrassed that they saw the policeman looking at my identity card. I demand an apology from the police. And I want to know why the police always turn a blind eye to dishonest taxi drivers.

To stand idly by 解作懶洋洋的站在一旁。 To turn a blind eye
