rudeness and selfishness

         Last Wednesday morning, something happened on an MTR train that really got under my skin. I was returning home from Kowloon Tong to Central after co-hosting a radio show at RTHK. When the train arrived at Kowloon Tong station, the people in front of me stood by the door after they boarded instead of moving to the middle of the train carriage. The middle of the carriage was not full and even had a few empty seats. I tried to move to the middle of the carriage but the passengers standing by the door did not make way for me. When I pushed past them to get to the middle of the carriage, they shouted at me for pushing them. Some were locals and others were mainland tourists.

        　　Their rudeness and selfishness got under my skin so much that I shouted back at them in Cantonese. I told them it was selfish to block the train door, making it hard for other passengers to board, when the middle of the carriage was not full. They ignored what I said and continued to scold me. That bugged me so much that I shouted back at them. When something gets under your skin, it means it angers or annoys you very much. Loud noise from construction sites gets under my skin. The word "bug" has several meanings. It is an American slang word for insect. But when something bugs you, it means it annoys you very much. It has a similar meaning to the expression "gets under your skin".

        　　What happened to me last Wednesday was so unpleasant that it bugged me all the way from Kowloon Tong to Central. I was doing the right thing by trying to get to the middle of the train carriage. That's why it was galling for the selfish people blocking the door to scold me. The word "galling" used this way means infuriating, annoying or irritating. I often wonder why people have become so selfish and rude.

        　　上星期三早上，在港鐵車上發生的事，真的激怒了我（got under my skin）。在港台聯合主持過一個電台節目後，我便逕自回家，從九龍塘乘車到中環。當列車駛至九龍塘站，前面的人上車後只懂站在門邊，而不是移至車廂中間。車廂中間並不滿，甚至還有幾個空位。我嘗試走進車廂中間，但站在門邊的乘客卻不讓路。當我從他們身邊擠過去車廂中間，他們卻大聲嚷着我不應推他們。他們當中有些是本地人，另一些則是內地遊客。

        　　他們的粗魯與自私完全激怒了我（got under my skin），我便以廣東話回罵過去。我跟他們說，阻塞車門通道是很自私的，令其他乘客難以登車，尤其是當車廂中間還未站滿人時。他們忽視我所說的，繼續斥責我。那實在惹惱了（bugged）我，令我回罵着他們。當某事gets under your skin，即是說它激怒了你或令你非常煩厭。建築地盤的噪音就令我非常煩厭（gets under my skin）。Bug 這個字也有幾個意思，美式俚語是指昆蟲。但當某物 bugs you，即是說它令你很煩惱或滋擾着你。它跟習語「gets under your skin」的意思相近。

        　　上星期三發生在我身上的事情實在很不愉快，令我從九龍塘到中環的整趟車程都惱怒萬分（bugged）。我嘗試走進車廂中間，是在做着對的事。因此，那些阻塞車門的自私鬼反罵我一番，實在令人光火（galling）。Galling 在這裏的意思是令人很生氣、厭煩或惱怒。我常常很驚訝，為何人們變得那麼自私和粗魯無禮。
