Is Hong Kong going down the drain?

| Nowadays, I often hear people say Hong Kong is going down the drain. The idiom “go down the drain" means to fail or to be destroyed. Many people feel Hong Kong has gone down the drain since the handover. Well-known businessman Allan Zeman said on my TVB show some time ago that Hong Kong is stuck. If you are stuck, it means you cannot move forward. Allan Zeman said Hong Kong is stuck because some politicians filibuster and politicize every issue. I agree with him. I also agree with people who say Hong Kong is going down the drain. Something happened to me last week that made me feel Hong Kong is stuck not only because of politics. I called up HSBC's phone-banking to order new cheques but could not find the option to do that. I then chose the option to talk to a customer service person. I waited for ten minutes but no one answered. I hung up and tried again but no one answered even after 15 minutes. I tried again the next day but the same thing happened. I then chose the option for credit cards and then pressed the number to talk to a person. Someone answered but refused to help with my request for cheques. She said she could only help me with credit cards. I lost my cool (got very angry) and told her I had tried for two days to reach a customer service person. I was so angry I used bad language and asked for a supervisor (manager, a person in charge). At first she refused, then said someone would call me. Someone phoned me from a call centre in Manila! He was not a supervisor and asked me to write a letter to HSBC for cheques. I tried to keep my cool (to not get angry) and asked how I could order cheques through phone-banking. He did not know and had to find out himself before he could tell me! This is just one example of Hong Kong going down the drain. I have heard many similar complaints about paid TV, mobile phone, internet, restaurant and shop services. 時至今日，我不時聽到人說香港正在 going down the drain。諺語 go down the drain即每況愈下，或付諸流水、前功盡廢。許多人感到香港自回歸以來，一直每況愈下（gone down the drain）。知名商人盛智文前一陣子上我在無綫的電視節目，說香港正裹足不前（stuck）。若你被 stuck，即是指你被卡住，未能前進。盛智文說香港裹足不前（stuck），因為有些政客總是拉布，也把每一個議題政治化。我同意他的說法。我也同意那些人說，香港正每況愈下（going down the drain）。上星期有些事發生在我身上，令我更感到香港不單單因為政治而Is Hong Kong going down the drain?（stuck）。 我早前為了訂新的支票簿而打去匯豐的電話理財，卻找不到合適的電話選項。於是我選擇跟客戶服務員對話。我等了十分鐘也無人接聽。我掛了電話再嘗試，但即使過了十五分鐘，依舊無人接聽。我第二天再試，但事情還是一樣。於是我試試信用卡那個選項，按了要跟人對話的鍵。有人接聽了，卻拒絕幫我取新支票簿的要求，她說她只能協助有關信用卡的事宜。我怒不可遏（lost my cool），跟她說我已經打了兩天去聯絡一個客戶服務員。我憤怒得用上了粗鄙的話，要求跟一個主管（supervisor）對話。 她最初拒絕，然後說會有人回電給我。那個電話卻是從馬尼拉電話中心打來的！他不是主管（supervisor），叫我寫封信給匯豐去取支票簿。我嘗試保持冷靜不發怒（keep my cool），問他我該怎樣可以透過電話理財訂支票簿。他也不知道，要先查清楚才能告訴我！這只是冰山一角，展示香港有多每況愈下（going down the drain）。我也聽過許多收費電視、流動電話、上網、餐廳和商店服務的類近投訴。 mickchug@gmail.com Michael Chugani褚簡寧 中譯：七刻 |
