My New Year’s resolution

31 Dec
Today is New Year’s Eve. At the stroke of midnight tonight, it will be 2016. Where will you be at the stroke of midnight tonight to welcome in the New Year? Every year, over one million people go to Times Square in New York City for the countdown to the stroke of midnight to welcome in the New Year. This tradition began on December 31, 1907. In Hong Kong, many revellers go to Lan Kwai Fong for the countdown to the New Year. People also go to Times Square in Causeway Bay. The expression “at the stroke of” or “on the stroke of” means exactly at a particular time. At (on) the stroke of midnight means exactly at midnight. People who enjoy themselves in a loud and noisy way are called revellers (revelers in American English).

As I have said before, many people make New Year’s resolutions. A New Year’s resolution is a promise that you make to yourself at the start of a new year to stop your bad habits or do things that are good. My New Year’s resolution last year and in 2014 was not to get angry so easily. I failed to keep this promise in both years. I got angry countless (too many to be counted) times in 2015. I hate travelling on the MTR. I get angry very easily with selfish people who board trains while looking at their mobile phones. They stand by the door so others cannot board. I’ve told these selfish people countless times to move to the middle so others can board but they never listen.

There were two typos (printing mistakes) in my December 24 column in the Headline Daily. The headline should have been “Party pooper” instead of “Party poorer”. There was also a typo in the sentence “Christmas Day is supposed the celebrate the birth of Christ”. It should be “to celebrate”. I want to thank all the readers who emailed me to point out these typos. My New Year’s resolution for 2016 is again not to get angry so easily. I hope I can keep my promise this time. Happy New Year.

今晚午夜鐘聲敲響(at the stroke of midnight)時,就會是二○一六年。午夜鐘聲響起(at the stroke of midnight)時,你又身在何處去迎接新年? 習語“at the stroke of” 或“on the stroke of”意思是整時、時針搭正某個時刻;At (on) the stroke of midnight就是午夜十二時正。尋歡作樂、喧鬧狂歡的人,就被稱為revellers(美式英語為revelers)。

(New Year’s resolutions)。 A New Year’s resolution

而在句子“Christmas Day is supposed the celebrate the birth of Christ”中,亦有出錯(typo),應是“to celebrate”。
