The disappearance of Lee Bo and four others from his publishing company is a big story. Chow Ting's video went viral because she accused the mainland of white terror and said Hong Kong is not Hong Kong anymore. The word “viral” comes from the word “virus”, which causes diseases and infections. But nowadays, if you say a video or picture has gone viral, it means it has circulated very quickly and widely on the internet. As I have said in previous columns, Chow Ting speaks good but not perfect English. She made several grammatical and pronunciation mistakes in the video and also used several words in the wrong way. I won't point out the grammatical mistakes because it's no big deal for people to make grammatical and pronunciation mistakes if English is not their first language.
Chow Ting said in the video that Lee Bo called his wife from Shenzhen to “notice” her not to publicize the matter. She should have said “notify her”. She said some Hong Kong people had acted as “dissents” to voice their disagreement towards China's Communist Party. She should have said “dissidents”. Dissidents are people who disagree with and criticize their government. She used the word “dissents” wrongly twice. As a verb, the word “dissent” means to disagree with others. As a noun, it means a disagreement or a strong difference of opinion.

上星期，我在新聞報道上聽見，學生組織學民思潮的周庭自拍了一條短片，放在面書，談論書商李波被綁架（abduction）一案。報道指，短片在社交網絡瘋傳（viral）。我在電視節目訪問過周庭好幾次，好奇她會怎樣說到李波被綁架事件（abduction）。我也想知道，為甚麼她會用英語，而影片又為何會被瘋傳（viral）。我不用面書，但在YouTube上找到短片。看短片時我就明白為何她要用英語，因為她想告知國際社會，中國內地因為李波售賣批評共產黨的書籍而綁架（abducted）他。
李波及其出版公司另外四人的失蹤，確實是個大事件。周庭的短片被瘋傳（viral），因為她指控內地製造白色恐怖，又說香港已不再是香港。Viral解作病毒性的，來自病毒virus一字。但到今天，若你說影片或圖片has gone viral，即是說它在網上火速被廣傳。我在之前的專欄中提及過，周庭的英語不完美但亦不錯。她在短片中犯了幾個文法和發音的錯處，也有幾個字的用法用錯了。我不會指出哪些文法錯誤，若人們的母語並非英語，犯下一些文法或發音錯處，沒有甚麼大不了。
周庭在影片中說，李波從深圳給他太太打電話，“notice”她別「搞大」事件。她要說的應是“notify her”。她說，有些香港人已成為“dissents”，向中國共產黨表達異議。她要說的應該是 dissidents。Dissidents 是指不同意及批評政府的異見者。她兩次錯用了“dissents”一字。Dissent作為動詞，解作與他人意見不一；作為名詞，則解作異議。
