morons and imbeciles

Do you know how many columns I have written to complain about traffic lights? I have written seven columns pointing out that the green light for pedestrians to cross the road lasts for less than 30 seconds but the green light for vehicles lasts for over two minutes. In April 2012 I wrote: “I often see elderly or disabled people unable to cross in time. In busy places such as Central, especially during rush hour, it is impossible for hundreds of pedestrians to cross when they are only given less than 30 seconds before the green light turns red again.”

In July 2013, I wrote: “One elderly reader, who needs a cane to walk, e-mailed to say he has to walk through three pedestrian traffic lights just to cross Nathan Road near Argyle Street. This means it takes him a long time to cross just one road because at each traffic light he has to wait a long time for the green light to cross.” Transport Department officials ignored my criticism. I called them morons and imbeciles but they didn’t care. Both words mean a stupid person or an idiot. Transport officials don’t care about pedestrians because they are thick-skinned and have an iron rice bowl. If you are thick-skinned, it means you don’t care about or are insensitive to criticism. An iron rice bowl means a guaranteed job with good pay and benefits.

Last week, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying admitted in his annual policy speech that pedestrian green lights do not last long enough for elderly people to cross the road. I pointed this out four years ago. Why has it taken so long for the government to realize this? Why does the Chief Executive have to personally handle a routine issue that should have been fixed years ago by the overpaid imbeciles at the Transport Department? Transport officials only care about vehicles. They don’t care about pedestrians. I want to remind these morons that vehicles cause pollution but pedestrians do not. Now that Leung Chun-ying has promised longer pedestrian lights, I demand that the morons carry out his order immediately.

An iron rice bowl
