“mainlandization”

More and more Hong Kong people are starting to worry about mainlandization. Many people, especially young people, say Hong Kong is already becoming mainlandized. Actually, there are no such words as “mainlandization” and “mainlandized”. Hong Kong’s English-language media created these words and they are now being used by the foreign media as well. The word “mainland” means a large piece of land that forms the larger part of a country but does not include the islands of that country. For example, the?mainland?of Australia does not include the island state of Tasmania, which is also part of Australia. The?mainland?of China does not include Hong Kong even though Hong Kong is a part of China. That’s why Hong Kong people call China the “mainland”.

When Hong Kong people use the word “mainlandization”, they mean that Hong Kong is becoming more like?mainland China. When young people say Hong Kong has already become?mainlandized, they mean that Hong Kong has already become like?mainland?China. Many people say the millions of?mainland?tourists who come here every year are mainlandizing?Hong Kong because restaurants and shopping malls are switching from traditional to simplified Chinese to attract mainland tourists. I was surprised when I read that the Education Bureau’s long-term goal (objective, intention, aim) is for schools to use Putonghua instead of Cantonese to teach the Chinese language. This is a clear example of?mainlandization.

Under one country, two systems, Hong Kong is supposed to keep its own legal system, way of life, and culture. Cantonese is part of Hong Kong’s culture. Using Putonghua to teach students the Chinese language will?erode?(slowly destroy) Hong Kong’s culture.? English was part of Hong Kong’s culture during colonial rule. The big drop in the standard of English since reunification has already?eroded?Hong Kong’s culture.? Teaching Chinese in Putonghua will cause further?erosion. It will also further?mainlandize?Hong Kong. I do not think?mainlandization?is good for Hong Kong. If Hong Kong is?mainlandized, it will no longer be a special city in China with a different culture.
