| Last week was very eventful for me. This means many interesting things, or events, happened to me last week. I went to Penang for three days. It was a work-cum-vacation. The word “cum” means “combined with”. A “work-cum-vacation” means a holiday that also includes doing some work. I live in a home-cum-office. This means I also use my home as my office for writing my columns and books. I went to Penang last year but went again last week because the Penang government cares very much about heritage buildings. I love to write about heritage buildings but Hong Kong doesn’t care too much about them. My eventful week started at Hong Kong airport. I was lucky to get a voucher (coupon, ticket) to use Cathay Pacific’s new business class lounge called The Pier. It is a big, luxurious, and relaxing lounge with many different kinds of food and facilities. I drank four glasses of wine with my lunch! Penang is too hot but the people are very laid-back. This means they are very relaxed and easy-going, unlike Hong Kong people, who work too hard. Many shops close at 6pm because the people want to enjoy their evenings. My Malaysian-Chinese friend took me to a small local dessert shop for Penang-style dessert. I was surprised to see a picture of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying with the shop’s owner hanging on the wall. The shop owner told me Leung Chun-ying likes to go there. It was eventful to see a picture of the Hong Kong chief executive in a small dessert shop in Penang. The shop owner told me Leung Chun-ying likes Penang-style dessert. My friend told me to try some too. I tried some but told him I wasn’t too keen on it. If you’re not keen on something, it means you don’t like it. On the plane back to Hong Kong, a passenger sitting near me stank of BO, which means body odour. If something stinks, it means it has a very bad smell. BO means a bad body smell. This was eventful but not pleasant because I had to smell his BO for nearly four hours. * I’ll be at the Book Fair at the Sing Tao booth (Hall 1C E23) today, July 26 (1-3pm) to sign my latest《又中又英》book. I hope to see you there. 上星期對我來說真是eventful，意思即是我上星期多姿多采、有許多事發生。我有三天去了檳城，那是半工作半度假（work-cum-vacation）的行程。“Cum” 即「兼」，work-cum-vacation就是度假中也附帶一些工作。我住在home-cum-office，即是說我將住家當作辦公室，用來寫專欄和書。我上年也去過檳城，但上星期再去，因為檳城政府非常關心古蹟建築。我愛撰寫關於古蹟建築的文章，但香港就不太在乎古蹟。我那多姿多采（eventful）的星期就在香港機場開始。我有幸獲得國泰航空最新的商務貴賓室「玉衡堂」的入場券（voucher），那貴賓室相當寬敞、豪華和舒適，配備許多不同種類的食物和設施。我午餐時還喝了四杯紅酒！ 檳城實在太熱，但人們都很laid-back，意思就是說他們都很悠閒與隨和，不像香港人，總是過勞工作。許多商店在黃昏六時便打烊，因為人們想好好享受晚上的時光。我的馬來西亞華僑朋友帶我到一間本地的甜品小店，試試檳城的地道甜品。牆上掛着特首梁振英與店主的合照，令我很意外。店主告訴我，梁振英很喜歡到訪當地。在檳城一間甜品小店見到香港特首的照片，真是件趣事（eventful）。店主還說，梁振英很喜歡檳城地道甜品。 我的朋友也叫我試試。我嚐了一點，跟他說我興致不大（wasn’t too keen）。若你not keen on something，意思即是你不喜歡。回港那程機上，坐附近的一位乘客散發着濃烈的體臭（stank of BO）。若某物stinks，即是說它很臭。BO就是body odour，意即體臭。這也是件趣事（eventful），可惜令人不太好受，因為我得忍受他的體臭味（BO），嗅了接近四小時。 * 我會於七月二十六日星期二（下午一至三時），在書展的星島攤位（Hall 1C E23）為我的新書《又中又英》簽名，希望到時見到你們。 中譯:七刻 Michael Chugani 褚簡寧 |
