the five-second rule

Do you know what the five-second rule is? If you do know what it is, do you believe in it? Many westerners believe in the five-second rule but I don’t think many Asians know about it. The?five-second rule means if you drop food on the floor but pick it up within five seconds, it is still safe to eat. According to this rule, bacteria (germs) will not have enough time to stick to the food within five seconds. Some people believe in the?three-second rule?instead of the five-second rule. The three-second rule means you must pick up the food within three seconds.

Scientists have done many tests over the years on the?five-second rule?and the?three-second rule. Some tests showed it is safe to eat food you have dropped if you pick it up within a few seconds but most scientists have?debunked?this theory. To debunk something means to show it is false. The words “discredit” and “disprove” have similar meanings. Scientists last week released the findings of a new study on the?five-second rule. The findings showed that there is actually no rule. The amount of germs that stick to food you have dropped depends very much on the type of food and where you have dropped it. If you drop food on the floor of a hospital or public toilet, a lot of?bacteria?will stick to it even if you pick it up within one second.

The study showed that more?bacteria?will stick to food with?moisture?(liquid) such as watermelon than to dry foods such as cookies. According to the study, it is OK for healthy people to eat dry foods such as cookies or candies they have dropped on clean floors, such as the floor of their home, if they pick up the food within a few seconds. I think the?five-second rule?is?a load of bunk?(slang expression for nonsense). I would never eat food I have dropped in public places, such as streets. I don’t even eat food I have dropped on the floor of my own home.
