“kick yourself”

24 May
Last week I did something that I always admonish (scold, criticize) other people for doing. I didn’t properly turn off my mobile phone when I went to see the acclaimed (publicly praised, much-admired) opera Carmen by French composer Georges Bizet. I had put my phone on silent mode so it wouldn’t make any noise during the show. But I had forgotten that the alarm function was on to remind me to take medicine that evening. The alarm sounds even though my phone is in silent mode. The alarm sounded during the show. I felt really embarrassed and pressed a button on the side of my phone to stop the sound.

But it sounded again after ten minutes! To stop it repeating, I had to turn on the screen and stop the alarm. But I was worried the screen light would disturb other people. Luckily, there was a brief break for a change to the stage setting. I quickly switched off the alarm. I kicked myself for forgetting about the alarm. To “kick yourself” means to be angry at yourself for doing something stupid. I had seen Carmen many years ago but was thrilled (excited) when the K. Wah Group invited me to see it again. The K. Wah Group was the sponsor of that evening’s performance. There were only five shows in total, performed by Opera Hong Kong as part of the Le French May arts festival, which organizes cultural activities every May.

Set in 19th century Spain, Carmen tells the story of a naive (trusting, innocent, simple) soldier who falls in love with Carmen, a gypsy girl. It is one of the most widely-performed operas in the world. The Hong Kong shows had a mixed cast of locals and performers from Europe. The word “cast” used this way means the performers or actors in a show or movie. I really enjoyed watching Carmen again last week. More and more Hong Kong people now enjoy arts festivals and other cultural events. It is good that big companies such as K. Wah Group are helping to promote art and culture in Hong Kong.
