The word “bloodbath” means a very violent event in which many people are killed. A similar word is “slaughter”. But the word can also be used for other events, such as an economic disaster. If a serious recession causes many thousands of people to lose their jobs, you can say it was a bloodbath. Many big companies around the world lost billions of dollars in the value of their stocks during last week’s stock market plunge. That’s why headline writers described it as a bloodbath.
