An eyesore

Hong Kong’s overcrowded residential areas are an eyesore. There are so many tall buildings so close to each other that they look like giant walls. Our city is a concrete jungle. The tall buildings block air flow. This traps pollution in our concrete jungle. Luckily, Hong Kong has many country parks. These parks are a sight for sore eyes.

During the Christmas holidays I left Hong Kong’s concrete jungle to spend a day at the Kam Shan country park because I haven’t been there in years. The park is famous for the numerous monkeys that live there. I saw some foreign tourists at the bus stop looking for signs pointing to the park’s entrance. The signage at the park is so bad that even I couldn’t find the entrance. A local man with his two young sons also couldn’t find the entrance.

After some searching we eventually found the entrance but didn’t see the foreign tourists. They probably went the wrong way. The word “signage” means the signs that tell people where something is or where to go. Hong Kong has very bad signage. I went to look at the new express rail terminus at West Kowloon. The terminus is definitely not an eyesore. It has a very modern design but the signage at the terminus is terrible. I tried to find the terminus rooftop, called the Sky Corridor, but the signage was very confusing. Even the woman on duty at the information desk didn’t know where it was. She didn’t even know how to speak English. This shows Hong Kong is no longer an international city. The express railway serves mostly mainland Chinese.

這些公園真是教人心矌神怡(a sight for sore eyes)。
