Caught Between A Rock And A Hard Place

Millions of people around the world use Huawei smartphones. I am one of them. As a Huawei phone user, I am caught between a rock and a hard place. If you are caught between a rock and a hard place, it means you are in a very difficult situation because you must choose between two undesirable alternatives. US President Donald Trump has ordered American companies to stop doing business with Huawei for security reasons. Even foreign firms cannot sell phone parts to Huawei if they contain American technology. That's why some Japanese and British companies have said they can no longer sell vital (essential) parts to Huawei. Trump’s order means Google can no longer provide new Huawei smartphones with Gmail, its search engine, and apps.

That's why I am caught between a rock and a hard place. Google has said the decision won't affect existing phones but how can I be sure? I need Google's search engine, Gmail, and apps for my work as a journalist. I am worried facebook, which owns WhatsApp, may also stop doing business with Huawei. WhatsApp is vital for me to keep in touch with government officials and politicians. Before I bought my Huawei phone three years ago, I had always used Samsung smartphones. I had wanted to replace my old Samsung with a Note 7, but Samsung stopped selling Note 7 after some exploded.

An expatriate friend suggested I buy a Huawei phone. I took his advice to try it instead of a different Samsung model. My phone is three years old but still works although it’s a lot slower. But I am worried it will become useless if I can no longer use Google or WhatsApp. Some news reports said numerous people in Britain are trading in their Huawei phones for other brands. To “trade in” something means to sell something old as part payment for something new. British retailers have now stopped accepting Huawei trade-ins because they think the phones will soon have no value. I must now decide whether to keep my Huawei phone or spend money unnecessarily to buy a different brand. What do you think?

身為華為的手機使用者,我實在是caught between a rock and a hard place。若你是 caught between a rock and a hard place,意即你處於兩難的局面,進退維谷。

          因此我真的左右為難(caught between a rock and a hard place)。
