Intermittent fasting

          For several months, I have been trying to get rid of my big belly (stomach). I ate a low carbohydrate diet, stopped eating French fries, fast-food hamburgers, and other unhealthy foods. I also exercised more. But friends tell me my belly is still bigger than before. It's not too big compared to many other people but my clothes no longer fit. I had to take my pants (trousers) to the tailor to enlarge the waist. Last week, I started something different to get rid of my burgeoning (growing quickly) belly. It’s called intermittent fasting. The adjective“intermittent”means not continuous or stopping and starting with periods of time in between. The word“fasting”means not eating food for a period of time.

          Intermittent fasting means not eating food for a period of time, then eating again, and then not eating again. Studies have shown this helps people lose weight and improve their health. There are several types of intermittent fasting. I have chosen the type that fits my work schedule. I decided on intermittent fasting after enjoying a good dinner with friends who all worked for the media before. We invited a retired senior government official as our guest, whom I shall not name. We began our dinner at the Yixin restaurant in Wanchai with an expensive Dom Perignon 2005 champagne. It paired perfectly with lobster, our first dish. Then we drank two bottles of Chateau Pontet-Canet, a French red wine, followed by a Portuguese red wine called Rocksand.

          The red wines were not expensive but paired well with the crab, chicken, and fish dishes we had. After one friend noticed my big belly, I decided to start intermittent fasting. The type I chose requires fasting for 16 hours. It’s easy. I finish dinner at 8pm, do not eat breakfast the next morning except for tea and coconut water, and then have lunch at 12 noon. This means I can fast for 16 hours. I finish dinner again at 8pm and follow the same routine the next day.

          我嘗試減走我的大肚腩(belly),已經努力了好幾個月。我吃低碳水化合物的餐單,戒了吃炸薯條、快餐店的漢堡包及其他不健康的食物。我也做多了運動。然而我的朋友們告訴我,我的肚腩(belly)仍然比之前的大。跟其他許多人比起來,我的也不算大,但衣服已不再合身了,我需要拿我的長褲(pants)去裁縫處放寬腰圍。上星期,我試了別的方法名為intermittent fasting,去減走我那急劇增大(burgeoning)的肚腩(belly)。形容詞intermittent是指斷斷續續、間歇性的;fasting 則指禁食一段時間。

          Intermittent fasting的意思就是在一段時間內斷食,之後再進食,然後又再斷食。有研究顯示,這可幫助人減重及改善人健康。Intermittent fasting有幾種方式,我選取了能配合我工作時間的一種。我與幾位之前也在傳媒界工作的朋友,享用了一頓美好的晚餐過後,便決定了開始間歇性斷食(intermittent fasting)。我邀請了一位已退休的政府高官(不在此透露是誰了)來作客。我們在灣仔的益新美食館吃飯,先以名貴的2005年Dom Perignon香檳王開始,它跟我們第一道的龍蝦真是絕配。然後,我們又喝了兩支法國龐特卡內堡的紅酒,接着是一支葡萄牙紅酒名Rocksand。

          那些紅酒不貴,但跟我們吃的蟹、雞和魚很相配。當有一位朋友留意到我的大肚腩(belly)後,我便決定要開始間歇性斷食(intermittent fasting)。我選擇了要斷食(fasting)十六個小時的一種方式。那很容易。我八時便吃完晚飯,次晨不吃早餐,只喝茶和椰子水,到中午十二時才吃午餐——那代表我可以斷食(fast)十六小時。然後,我又在八時吃過晚餐,翌日又再重複相同的程序。中譯:七刻
