美國偉大的思想家、文學家、演說家、勵志先驅，確立美國文化精神的代表人物，被稱為“美國文明之父”、“美國模式的確立者”、“美國精神的先知”、“美國的孔子”。
愛默生一生實現了他的三個奮鬥目標：一是抨擊基督宗教，即肯定人的價值，使美國人的人格從基督教教條中解放出來；二是廢除奴隸制，使美國成為尊重人權的自由、民主國家；三是建立美國的民族文學，使美國文學不再成為歐洲文學的模仿品，比如惠特曼的詩歌，梭羅的散文，梅爾維爾的小說都具有鮮明的美國民族的特色，這一代作家都受到過愛氏的影響，從而形成美國的文藝復興。
除Ralph Waldo Emerson (拉爾夫·沃爾多·愛默生，1803-1882)外，Thomas Paine（托馬斯·潘恩，1737－1809)、Thomas Jefferson ((托馬斯·杰斐遜，1743-1826)和Benjamin Franklin (本傑明·富蘭克林，1706-1790)不僅在美國，而且在整個西方的啟蒙運動中具有國際性影響。他們都深受中國孔子儒家思想的影響。除了愛默生被林肯稱為“美國的孔子” （American Confucius）之外，富蘭克林也享有“美國的孔子”之稱。正是這幾位啟蒙思想家，奠定了美國文化的基石。

大家知道，近代西方不僅在科技工業方面為人類做出了巨大的貢獻，在思想文化上也有巨大的成就。近代西方文明是中國學習的榜樣。而追溯到兩三百年前，中國文明也曾經對西方產生過巨大的影響。不僅中國古代科技是近代西方科技發展乃至工業革命的基礎之一，而且中國儒家思想，對於西方進入近代文明社會，也發揮了啟蒙作用。
