I resisted the urge to buy a couple Birkenstocks for about a couple of years. They're pretty pricey for any sandal, and I just didn't know how long the crunchy sandal look would be in vogue, especially in Manhattan City where I live.

Then I got a strong annoying, mysterious foot damage, and my podiatrist said I couldn't wear any kind of super flat shoes—effectively ruling out each pair of sandals WE owned—right as summer had been rounding the corner.

So I did it—I pulled apart the trigger and bought a set of orgeous, supportive, white Birkenstocks. Our feet were happy. My wallet would overcome it. But I seemed to be obsessed.

At the time frame, I was gearing up for your big trekking trip around Peru with REI Things to do; we'd be spending a short time in Cusco, Peru, hiking Macchu Picchu and heading up to the high Andes mountains to get a multi-day lodge-to-lodge trek. I needed to bring a couple of sandals that would maintain my foot injury by flaring up (especially with all the time I'd be shelling out hiking), and could serve since my ~chill~ sandals within the lodges or while walking around town...but I sure as hell wasn't gonna bring my shiny whitened, brand-new Birkenstocks on you will need hiking trip, complete along with llamas and alpacas in abundance. Le dilemma.

Luckily, somewhere on the internet, I stumbled across the waterproof version belonging to the classic Birkenstock Arizona sandals—and for less of the $100+ price tag of the leather and cork versions. (FYI, you are not supposed to get the classic Birks super wet because doing so can damage the buckskin and compromise the sealant, in accordance with the brand. )

This occassion, I didn't even try and resist; I snagged some black Birkenstock Arizona Necessities (Buy It, $45, amazon. com), which are constructed with EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) a brilliant light plastic polymer that may be flexible and feels nearly like foam under you a.
And, TBH, I almost hate to express it, but I could even love these babies over the originals. Because they're made of EVA, they're totally watertight, easy to clean, float in the event you drop them in any body of water, and therefore are also insanely comfortable. While they're not quite as supportive since the classic cork Birkenstocks (which are known internet marketing great for your ft, thanks to their orthotic-like footbeds), they're more comfortable, since the EVA gives you cushion-like give. It feels like you're walking on small memory foam platforms.

I've since worn these individuals for long walks around San francisco City, to the seaside, on boats, around the property, and for walks within the woods—these things go just about everywhere and still look beautiful. I bought a charcoal pair because I assumed We'd get them dirty, although after seeing how quickly they rinse off, I would need to buy a few of their bright colorways also. (Which, honestly, at just $45, who can resist?!) The brand presently offers 11 different colors with the waterproof sandal on Amazon, such as khaki green, bright white, coral, metallic copper, and also scuba blue. They in addition have a creamsicle orange coloring that's, like, pure, summer joy within a shoe.
Reviewers agree that these sandals are the freaking best; 75 percent belonging to the 6, 814 reviewers on Amazon give them away five stars, and there're also ranked a #1 Greatest Seller on Amazon for women's slide sandals. One particular reviewer, who has worn leather Birks for "about 20 years now, usually finding a new pair every handful of years" says that they thought to give the EVA The us Essentials a shot, and finished up loving them: "I wore these nearly every day for about 8 months and I'm sure I could probably keep getting a while, but they are looking a bit worn. I am impressed with these. I feel as though I undoubtedly got my $40 worth people out of them. " The particular reviewer also mentions this "for $40, these are a good introduction to people who aren't ready to spend the big bucks for the leather versions, and they are also a great deal for people who like Birkenstocks but want something waterproof. "

Should you be interested but not into your traditional double-strap style, you can even grab a pair in their Barbados Essentials slides (Buy Them, $40, amazon. com), Gizeh Tools T-strap sandal (Buy This, $45, amazon. com), or perhaps a pair of the Birkenstock Honolulu Sandal (Buy The idea, $40, amazon. com), your supportive flip flop, within the same EVA material.

All I can say is the fact that once you've tried a pair of Birks (leather or EVA) you can not go back—you'll be connected.
