I was very excited when I received this guide book as I am a massive fan of the television series and Titan Books. I was not disappointed in the slightest. This book is an amazing depiction of each of the complicated characters and explains brilliantly how their lives intertwined as the story progressed. Amazingly this was all achieved without being confusing.

The book starts with a brief synopsis and the introduction of the first chapter named Genesis. The layout of the page itself is very comic book like in the way that there are lots of little boxes scattered across the page giving you even more information on the programme with pictures as examples. It gives a detailed description of everything that happened in the programmes released to the public and also the parts that were not and hints of what is to come.

With interviews and writers comments through the book it really gives the reader an inside look at the production of the series which I find fascinating to read as I am sure other fans will too. The only thing that I found disappointing was that Christopher Eccleston (Claude Raines) was not mentioned. Claude was a major part of Peter Petrelli’s progression to master his new found abilities and also gave him the power of invisibility, however I can understand that with all the other characters and the amount of explanation that is needed to make the characters’ lives understood the writer may not have seen an appropriate place to put him in. This aside I thoroughly enjoyed the guide.

Further into the book there is a table which shows people who Sylar and Peter have come across in the series and whom have passed on their powers to either one or both of these characters making them more powerful as the series progresses. There is also a part in Sylar’s character profile which is entitled “Psycho Analysis” where it explains Sylar’s mind set and his split personality which I found particularly interesting. It shows how Sylar uses different sides of his persona to connect with other characters that have an ability he wants. It then goes on to explain all of the other main characters such as Claire, Niki, Isaac, D.L and Micah in great detail and explain thoroughly their links to each other and their abilities. After the character profiles it goes on to show how often the helix symbol pops up in the series without us actually realising.

A chapter entitled ‘Back to the Future’ refers to Season 1 Chapter 20 “Five Years Gone”, such as Hiro teleporting into the future where he sees an explosion that destroys New York. Everything in this book is very informative and explains very well each stage of the characters’ lives and each stage of the storyline. This book is an incredible read. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Heroes.
