記得那天，我忘了告訴你那個舞會是要穿禮服的，而你卻穿了牛仔褲

是的，有許多的事你都沒有做，而你容忍我鍾愛我保護我

有許多許多的事情我要回報你，等你從越南回來

《But You Didn't》

Remember the day I borrowed your brand new car and dented it?
I thought you'd kill me, but you didn't.

Remember the time I dragged you to the beach, and you said it would rain, and it did?
I thought you'd say "I told you so" , but you didn't.

Remember the time I flirted with all the guys to make you jealous, and you were?
I thought you'd leave, but you didn't.

Remember the time I spilled strawberry pie all over your car rug?
I thought you'd hit me, but you didn't.

Remember the time I forgot to tell you the party was formal and you showed up in jeans?
I thought you'd ｄ ｒｏｐ me, but you didn't.

Yes, there were lots of things you didn't do.
But you put up with me, and loved me, and protected me.

There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you when you returned from Vietnam.
But you didn't.

後記：

1959年－1975年，南越和北越打仗，美國決定參戰，派出大量美軍前赴戰場，協助南越，戰事膠著，死傷無數，越南戰事之慘烈，史上赫赫有名。

當時在美國有一個普通的家庭，在女兒4歲時，丈夫被徵召入伍，趕赴越南前線參加越戰，剩下婦人與女兒相依為命，但不幸在戰場陣亡，為國捐軀，他的愛人痛不欲生，立誓此生不改嫁，終身守寡至年老病逝，享年80歲。

女兒在母親去世後，整理她的遺物，發現了這一首動人的詩，那是母親寫給亡夫的悲歌，是一封未曾寄出的情書。

這首詩感人肺腑，字裡行間，透露著不少牽掛，和動人的情節，無論是撞壞丈夫的新車，餅乾吃得滿地都是，忘記告訴丈夫要穿禮服赴宴；但丈夫從沒有生氣，反而每次都用溫柔的微笑，牽著婦人的手，一如往常的貼心愛著她。

一場越戰，將這一切都改變了，婦人希望丈夫能夠平安歸來，回報他一直以來的愛護，但願望落空，這位婦人再也沒有見過丈夫。
