         Have you ever seen MTR staff intercept parallel goods traders? I have never seen it even though I often see parallel goods traders carrying oversized luggage. Do you often see students carrying oversized musical instruments on the MTR? I seldom see students carrying oversized musical instruments on MTR trains. So why are MTR attendants only picking on students with oversized musical instruments and preventing them from travelling on the MTR? Why are the attendants not picking on parallel goods traders or mainland tourists with large suitcases? Students carry oversized musical instruments on the MTR only when they have to go for music lessons. Parallel goods traders with oversized luggage are smuggling goods across the border several times a day. They are breaking mainland law.

        　　I think MTR attendants do not dare pick on parallel goods traders because they are afraid of them. The attendants only dare pick on young students. The slang expression “pick on” means to always criticize, blame, or tease someone unfairly. It has a similar meaning to the word “bully”. The word “intercept” can be used in several ways but used this way it means to prevent someone from going where he wants to go. Customs officials often intercept people suspected of smuggling drugs. The word “oversized” means bigger than the usual size. The word “attendant” can be used in several ways but when used this way it means a person hired to serve the public in a particular place. For example, carpark attendants collect parking fees.

        　　Hong Kong people have complained about parallel goods traders and mainland tourists with oversized luggage for a long time. No one has complained about students with large musical instruments because only a small number of students carry large musical instruments on the MTR. Yet the MTR is only intercepting students. Attendants refuse to let students board trains and tell them to take other forms of transport. It is more difficult and even unsafe for students to carry large instruments on buses or trams. Does the MTR want students to take taxis? Not all students can afford that, especially if they have to travel long distances.

         你可有見過港鐵職員攔截（intercept）水貨客？我就從來沒見過，即使我不時見到水貨客帶着體積過大（oversized）的行李。你又是否常常見到學生攜帶過大（oversized）的樂器搭港鐵？我就鮮有在車廂中見到學生攜帶過大（oversized）的樂器了。因此，為甚麼港鐵服務員（attendants）只會欺負（picking on）攜帶過大（oversized）樂器的學生，制止他們乘搭港鐵？怎麼服務員（attendants）不去向那些水貨客或攜帶大型行李的內地旅客找碴（picking on）呢？只有是當學生要去上音樂課的時候，他們才會攜帶過大（oversized）的樂器入港鐵。水貨客帶着過大（oversized）的行李，卻是一日幾次過境走私貨物，他們正在違反內地的法律。

        　　我認為，港鐵的服務員（attendants）不敢欺負（pick on）水貨客，全因害怕他們。那些服務員（attendants）只敢欺負（pick on）年輕學生。俚語 pick on意指常常批評、責難，或不公平地欺負某人，跟“bully”這字意思相近。Intercept 可有幾種用法，這裏則解作攔截某人，令其不能前往想去的地方。海關官員就不時攔截（intercept）懷疑偷運毒品的人。Oversized 就是體積比平常的為大。 Attendant 也有幾個用法，這裏是指受僱在特定場所服務大眾的人。

        　　香港人已經就水貨客和攜帶過大（oversized）行李的旅客，投訴了很長的時間。從沒有人投訴攜帶大型樂器的學生，因為只有少數的學生會帶大型樂器入港鐵。然而，港鐵卻只管攔截（intercepting）學生。服務員（attendants）拒絕容讓學生上車，叫他們改搭其他交通工具。要學生攜帶大型樂器搭巴士或電車，是更加困難，甚至是不安全的。港鐵的意思是叫學生搭的士嗎？不是所有學生都能承擔得來，特別是他們要搭長途的話。中譯：七刻
