Feng shui & the Year of the Monkey

| In my previous column I asked what was in store for Hong Kong in the Year of the Monkey. The expression "in store" means "about to happen" or "coming in the future". I said that a feng shui expert I interviewed on my TVB show had told me bad luck was in store for Hong Kong in the Year of the Fire Monkey. I also wrote that I wasn't sure whether or not to believe in feng shui. But two things happened last week that made me believe I should not trivialize feng shui as a load of bunk (nonsense). To trivialize something means to treat it as unimportant or insignificant. A similar word is "belittle". The expression "make light of" has a similar meaning. The Mong Kok riots on the first day of the Lunar New Year and the stock market freefall last Thursday when the Hong Kong stock market re-opened after the New Year holidays made me believe that I should not belittle or make light of feng shui. The word "freefall" means a very fast fall that cannot be stopped. The riots and the stock market freefall convinced me that I should treat feng shui more seriously. Most feng shui experts, including the one I interviewed on my TV show, warned that the Year of the Fire Monkey would bring a lot of turbulence to the world. The word "turbulence" means instability or disorder. The feng shui experts were right. The Year of the Monkey has just started but we have already seen riots in Mong Kok and stock market freefalls around the world. What other bad things are in store for us? I do not know but I hope there won't be any more riots in Hong Kong. I was shocked when I saw TV news footage of rioters continuing to beat a policeman who had already been knocked to the ground. I was angry when some pan-democrats refused to condemn the rioters and blamed the government instead for the riots. 在上一篇專欄中，我問到不知香港在猴年會有甚麼事情發生（in store）。習語in store是指將要發生的事或是將來如何。我提及在我電視節目上訪問的一位風水專家，告訴我香港在火猴年將會迎來（in store）厄運。我也寫到，我不確定是否該信風水。但上星期有兩件事發生，令我相信我不應輕視（trivialize）風水為一派胡言（load of bunk）。To trivialize something意指將某事視為不重要或瑣碎。相近的字有belittle，習語make light of 也有類似意思。 在農曆新年初一旺角的騷亂，以及上星期四香港股市於新年年假後一重開即如自由落體般（freefall）急瀉，令我相信我不應貶低（belittle）或看輕（make light of）風水。Freefall意思是快速下跌而不能制止。那些騷亂和股市的自由落體（freefall）令我信服，我應更認真看待風水。大部份的風水師，包括我在電視節目上訪問的一位，也提醒過猴年將會為世界帶來很多動盪（turbulence）。Turbulence解作不穩定或動亂。 風水師是對的。猴年伊始，我們就遇見旺角的騷亂和世界各地股市的暴跌（freefalls）。還有甚麼糟糕的事等着我們（in store for us）？我不知道，但我希望香港不會再有更多騷亂。當我見到電視新聞片段中，當警員已經被打至跌在地上，暴徒仍然繼續去打他，我非常震驚。有些泛民人士就着騷亂只去怪罪政府，而拒絕譴責那些暴徒，我也感到很憤慨。 mickchug@gmail.com 中譯:七刻 Michael Chugani 褚簡寧 |
