"Somewhere in Time"

A good friend of mine who lives and works on the mainland is feeling down in the dumps. This slang expression means feeling sad, depressed, or gloomy. His young and pretty mainland girlfriend has dumped him. The word “dump” has several meanings but to dump someone is a slang word that means to break up with or leave someone. His girlfriend?dumped?him to go back to her hometown to get married. That’s why he is feeling?down in the dumps. I tried to?console?him. To console someone means to comfort or cheer him up. He did not want to be consoled and went to a bar to get drunk.

It is partly my friend's fault that his girlfriend has dumped him. He doesn't want to marry her because he is much older. Also, he is divorced and has two children in school. A few days before my friend's girlfriend dumped him, I heard a song with beautiful lyrics (words of a song) on internet radio called “Somewhere in Time”. I had never heard this song before. A Google search showed the song is from a 1980 movie with the same name. I told my friend the song's lyrics would console him. The song’s music was composed(written, created) by John Barry. A Google search also showed there are two versions of lyrics for the same song.

The lyrics in one version say:“Where there is time there is tomorrow. Somewhere in time, all sorrows pass to memories. And so the end is the beginning”. This means time will bring a new tomorrow, sadness will become just a memory as time passes, and the ending of something will bring the beginning of something new. The other version says:“You'll always be inside of me. And I know when love is true it's always with you.Somewhere in time I came to realize love never goes”. This means true love will never go away. It will always be in your heart. I told my friend time will help him forget his sadness and if his mainland girlfriend really loves him, she will always remember him.

他的女友拋棄(dumped)他,回到家鄉結婚去,因此他感到很沮喪(down in the dumps)。

其中一個版本的歌詞(lyrics)有一句是這樣的:“Where there is time there is tomorrow. Somewhere in time, all sorrows pass to memories. And so the end is the beginning”,它的意思是說,時間會帶來新的明天,當時間過去,憂傷將會化成回憶,而一件事的結束,會換來一些新事物的開始。另一個版本則道:“You'll always be inside of me. And I know when love is true it's always with you. Somewhere in time I came to realize love never goes”,它是說,真愛永不消逝,它將永存心底。
