“Once bitten, twice shy”

One of my favourite proverbs is: “Once bitten, twice shy”. It means if something has hurt you once before, you will avoid doing it again. For example, if you fall in love with a girl who agrees to marry you but then leaves you for another man, you will feel very hurt and will avoid falling in love again. You can then say: “Once bitten, twice shy”. Many years ago, I had a bowl of snake soup without knowing what it was. My friends told me it was chicken soup. But after I finished the soup, I felt very hot and my whole body began to itch. My friends then told me it was snake soup. I have avoided snake soup ever since. Once bitten, twice shy.

I enjoy drinking red wine in the evening to relax. I like to eat potato chips and peanuts when I drink wine. I often scrape?my tongue or the inside of my mouth when I eat peanuts or potato chips. The word “scrape” used this way means to injure with something sharp such as chewed up peanuts. I wrote three years ago that I?scraped?the inside of my mouth near my throat while eating peanuts. A large bubble filled with blood formed, making it difficult for me to breathe. These bubbles are called?blood blisters. I almost dialed 999 but the?blood blister?burst. A very painful white spot called a mouth ulcer?or canker sore formed. I could only eat congee and soup for over a week.

I promised myself I would never eat peanuts and potato chips again but I broke my promise because I love potato chips and peanuts. I have had many blood blisters in the past few years but none as bad as the one I had three years ago. I never eat spicy food but I sometimes get?blood blisters?even from eating chocolates. Last week I?scraped?my tongue while eating peanuts and a huge?blood blister?formed. It burst after one day and now I have a very painful mouth ulcer. I should remember the proverb “Once bitten, twice shy” and never eat peanuts again!
