This is overkill

I recently heard a song called Colours by the 1960s singer Donovan. The lyrics (words of a song) started with this line: “Yellow is the colour of my true love’s hair”. Actually, yellow is one of the colours I dislike most. I also dislike brown. I steer clear of yellow or brown shirts and ties but I do have brown shoes. To steer clear of something means to avoid something. I steer clear of eating chicken feet because the taste makes me want to puke (vomit, throw up). Even looking at chicken feet sometimes makes me want to?puke. My favourite colour is purple. I also like lavender, blue and pink.?Lavender?is the same colour as a flower with the same name.

I have lavender, purple, blue, and pink shirts and ties. My suits are blue, black and grey (gray in American English). I don’t dare wear pink, purple, or lavender suits! People would stare at me if I wore a pink suit. Also, I don’t think my boss would allow me to wear a pink suit for my TVB show. People who supported Occupy Central wore yellow ribbons and carried yellow umbrellas. People who opposed Occupy Central wore blue ribbons. Just because I like blue and dislike yellow doesn’t mean I like the establishment camp and dislike the democracy camp. I belong to the neutral camp. To be neutral (impartial) means to not support either side.

I was surprised to read that security staff took away yellow umbrellas from reporters who were at the airport last week for the arrival of state leader Zhang Dejiang. They even took away a yellow towel used for covering a camera. This was?overkill?(doing more than was necessary). Civic Party leader Alan Leong Kah-kit, who always wore a yellow tie and?pocket square?(handkerchief for the breast pocket of a jacket) during Occupy Central, wore them again when four pan-democrats met with Zhang Dejiang. Former chief secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang deliberately wore a yellow dress when she and other VIPs met Zhang Dejiang. Why were they allowed to do so when reporters were not allowed to have anything yellow?

To steer clear of就是避開某些事物。
