| You can’t judge a book by its cover. I learnt this proverb as a young student. It is hard for most people, including me, to follow the advice in this proverb. This proverb means you cannot know what a person or thing is like just by looking at the person or thing. For example, you cannot know if a book is interesting or not just by looking at the cover. You cannot know if a person is intelligent or stupid just by looking at the person. But most people judge others just by looking at them. I often judge food just by looking at it. My friends ordered something in a Japanese restaurant recently which I decided I didn’t like just by looking at it. But when I tried it, I realized it tasted good. There are several ways to say this proverb. Some people say: “You can’t judge a book by its cover”. Others say “Don’t judge a book by its cover” or “Never judge a book by its cover”. They all have a similar meaning. Two weeks ago, I made the mistake of?judging a book by its cover?when I was travelling on the MTR. While I was waiting for a train, a woman came and stood in front of me. I don’t think she realized she had stood in front of me. It made me angry because she should have stood behind me since I was there first. I swore?(cursed) in English?under my breath. To swear (curse) used this way means to use bad language. When you say something under your breath, it means you say it very quietly so it is hard for anyone to hear. When I?swore?under my breath, I had assumed the woman wouldn’t understand because I had used English. She did not look like a person who could speak English. But she looked at me and said in almost perfect English that she likes my TVB show. I felt very embarrassed and thanked her for watching my show. That incident reminded me that I should never judge a book by its cover. ＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊ You can’t judge a book by its cover.這句諺語是我還是年輕學子時學到的。但對於包括我在內的大部份人而言，要跟從這句話的建議，真的不容易。這句諺語的意思是不能以貌取人，或單憑某事物的外表去判斷。譬如，你不能單靠一本書的封面，就肯定那本書是否有趣。但許多人都以貌取人。我便常常單靠食物的外觀去判斷。最近我的朋友在日本餐廳點了一些食物，我看上去就認定自己不會喜歡吃了，但嚐過後，卻發現它原來很美味。 這句諺語可以有幾種說法，有些人說：“You can’t judge a book by its cover”，另一些人則說“Don’t judge a book by its cover”或“Never judge a book by its cover”，它們的意思是接近的。兩星期前我搭港鐵，就犯了個以貌取人（judging a book by its cover）的錯誤。我正等候火車，有個女人走過來，站在我前面。我不認為她知道自己站了在我的前面。這令我很生氣，因為我先來，她應該站在我後面。我低聲（under your breath）用英文罵髒話（swore）。To swear 在這裏是指講粗口。當你say something under your breath，意思即是低聲悄悄的說，旁人難以聽見。 當我低聲（under my breath）罵髒話（swore）時，我是假設了那女人不會聽得懂，因為我用的是英語。她不像懂得說英語的人。然而，她望着我，用近乎完美的英語跟我說，她很喜歡看我在無綫的電視節目。我尷尬極了，趕緊感謝她收看我的節目。這件事再次提醒我，我從不應該以貌取人（never judge a book by its cover）。 中譯:七刻 Michael Chugani 褚簡寧 |
