STARS of screen, music and sport have called on voters to shun the extremist British National Party in the European election today.

The north west region is being targeted by the neo-Nazi group which hopes to win a place for its leader, Nick Griffin, in the European Parliament.

The BNP needs just eight per cent of the vote in today's ballot to win a seat for Griffin who has a conviction for distributing material likely to incite racial hatred.

The party, which bans black and Asian people from joining, wants British people who do not have white skin to leave their own country.

Former Dr Who actor Chris Eccleston urged voters to think twice before casting a vote for the far-right racist party.

The Salford star said: "A vote for BNP is a vote for racism, hatred, violence and ignorance. The BNP seek only to divide and destroy."
