a crying shame

It’s a crying shame that Canto-pop superstar Andy Lau Tak-wah had to cancel seven long-awaited concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum during the festive season because of a sore throat. Lau Tak-wah doesn’t often have concerts. Nearly 90,000 fans bought tickets to his concerts, which were part of a world tour. That’s why it’s a crying shame he had to cancel seven of them. A crying shame is an expression you use if something makes you feel sad or disappointed. For example, it’s a crying shame so many elderly people in Hong Kong have to collect cardboard boxes to sell for a living. The festive season is the period during Christmas and the New Year.

The concert organizer has urged fans to hang on to their tickets while it reschedules the concerts. The expression “hang on to” something means to keep it. I always hang on to or keep my old mobile phones because I want to know how much technology has advanced. But the Hong Kong Coliseum is fully booked. This means Lau Tak-wah fans will have to hang on to their tickets for at least a year while the organizer tries to reschedule the concerts. I have met Lau Tak-wah once at a dinner some years ago. We took a picture together but I am sure he will not remember me. I have two suggestions for him.

I take a flu shot every year but do not know if he does the same. If his sore throat was caused by the flu because he did not take a flu shot, I suggest he starts taking a flu shot every year and urges everyone to do the same. He is so famous I am sure people will take his advice. My second suggestion is that he gives a free concert at the Hong Kong Stadium, which can seat 40,000 people. This will delight his legion (large number) of fans. The rescheduled concerts should, of course, still go ahead but the free concert will show he cares about his fans. Many famous overseas musicians give free charity concerts. Those who attend his concert can voluntarily donate to charity.

習語“hang on to” something就是保留某物。
