“Shaken, not stirred”

          Many people like James Bond movies but I am not a fan of noisy action movies with car chases. I prefer movies with deep meaning and good acting. I haven’t seen a James Bond movie in years. But there’s a famous line in many James Bond movies that I like. Whenever he orders a martini, he always says to the bartender or waiter: “Shaken, not stirred”. Just like James Bond, I am a great fan of martinis. It is one of my favorite drinks. I sometimes have an ice-cold martini before dinner as an aperitif. An aperitif is an alcoholic drink before a meal to improve the appetite.

          A martini can be made with either gin or vodka mixed with ice and a small amount of vermouth. Some people prefer a few olives in a martini while others prefer a small piece of twisted lemon peel. The past participle “shaken” comes from the word “shake”. It has several meanings but used this way it means to move something up and down and from side to side with force. Bartenders use a small metal container to shake drinks that are mixed with ice and several ingredients. The word “stirred”, which is the past tense of “stir”, also has several meanings but used this way it means to mix a liquid in a circular motion with an object such as a spoon.

          Should a martini be shaken or stirred? James Bond prefers it shaken but most experts agree mixed drinks that use only clear alcohol such as gin and vermouth should be stirred. Alcoholic drinks that include ingredients such as fruit juice should be shaken. The ice will make the martini look cloudy if it is shaken. It will also bruise (hurt, injure) the quality of the gin. A stirred martini will not make it look cloudy but takes longer to prepare because it has to be stirred longer to make it cold. I prefer stirred martinis but most bartenders serve shaken martinis. Either way, please remember to drink in moderation, which means not too much. Many doctors say people shouldn’t drink alcohol at all.

          許多人喜歡占士邦電影,但我就不愛看飛車追逐那種嘈吵的動作片。我比較喜歡有深層意思和好演技的電影。我已多年沒有看過一套占士邦的戲了,但有一句台詞在許多占士邦電影中出現過,我倒很喜歡。每當他叫一杯馬天尼(martini)時,都會跟調酒師或侍應說:“Shaken, not stirred”。一如占士邦,我是馬天尼(martinis)的忠實擁躉,它是我最喜愛的飲品之一,我有時會於晚餐前喝杯冰凍的馬天尼(martini)作為開胃酒(aperitif)。An aperitif就是用以開胃的餐前酒。

          一杯馬天尼(martini)應該手搖(shaken)抑或攪拌(stirred)?占士邦就喜歡手搖(shaken)了,但大部份專家都認為,用上如氈酒和苦艾酒這種高純度酒精類的混合飲品,最好應該用攪拌(stirred)的方式;而包含了果汁這類材料的酒精飲品,就應該手搖(shaken)。馬天尼(martini)用手搖(shaken)的話,冰塊會令之變得混濁,同時也會損害(bruise)氈酒的質素。

          一杯攪拌的(stirred)馬天尼(martini)就不會令它混濁,但就需要更長的準備時間,因為需要攪拌(stirred)得更久才能令它變冷。我也喜歡攪拌的(stirred)馬天尼(martinis),但大部份調酒師都會捧上手搖的(shaken)馬天尼(martinis)。不論何種方法,都請謹記要節制着(in moderation)喝,不要喝太多。許多醫生也都說,人根本不應喝任何酒類。
