Modern buildings has changed the appearance of cities and towns. Some people ague we should build all buildings in traditional styles to protect the cultural identity. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

For the reasons of modern buildings destroying the original scenes of urban areas, there are suggestions to transform all the buildings into traditional styles. This is claimed to be retaining city-dwellers’ “cultural identity”. However, I found such suggestions and rationales, to a large extent, could not be agreed.

Imagine that all modern buildings are rebuilt or decorated as traditional styled ones. Of course, there will not be anything regarded as “multi-storey buildings” by then on, nor, if yes, the appearance of the buildings could become very strange, For the limitation of traditional buildings’ aesthetic value, and with the limit of the urban space, buildings undergone “surgeries” can no longer hold the ever-increasing population. The costs for buying and renting commercial estates and retailing places will surge up as high as most of the people would become beggars.

Apart from “space war in urban areas”, difficulties in combining the safety standard of modern buildings and traditional out-looks require far too much time, money and resources. Why to devote efforts into activities that cannot improve modern people’s social conditions?

Last but not least, the idea that “retaining the buildings’ traditional style” is not fully supported by the claim of protecting people’s cultural identity. It is enough for us to know more about the previous cultures of the cities and towns with the existence of cultural relics which the government suggests to protect. Books, museums and even the internet can serve as supplementary tools to investigate into matters about the traditional culture. What is more, is it really the case that buildings being resembled to traditional ones can give people a clear image of the old society?

In a nutshell, superficial actions cannot retain the importance of getting to know the traditional culture. It is never rational to let the society “to go backward”. We should cherish the present skills in safeguarding urban areas with modern building principles, while reserving the limited resources without forgetting or destroying them.
