香港不少有經驗的馬主都很精打細算，他們大部分是生意成功，或者是專業中的精英（否則無可能負擔得起高昂的養馬費）。但做任何生意都要打算盤，養馬出賽也是一樣。
不過仍是有人會當買匹馬等於買機器或生財工具，望要有回報。所以坊間不時有傳某馬主肯出一千萬以上求佳駟，不過這類馬主數埋不過十人。反而想以五十萬或以下買匹PP或PPG，望取得一兩場頭馬便回本者，大不乏人。
現在不是上世紀九十年代，回歸之前PP入口有上限而下限極低，加上體驗亦不嚴格，十萬港元已買得成一匹馬。現在要符合有下限的賽績，又要通過全球幾乎最嚴格的體驗，除非是一些馬主本身早在周歲購入的PPG，贏夠資格運港又或試準運港，又或者是一些跑到差不多年齡或出賽次數上限而健康有瑕疵之輩，否則用
五十萬元以下要買到一匹出賽馬，並不容易。
現時的遊戲規則已與過往不同。這不是「搬龍門」，而是香港近幾年行精英制，大賽獎金直上雲霄，四班一季贏兩場頭馬，隨時未夠一季養馬費呢！
