Film Review - Into the Woods

If you have read children books, you must know of the adventures of Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and so on. Oftentimes, the story ends with "They live happily ever after". As time goes by, people start to think, query and doubt if it is true. The stories are being revised and retold. One patently successful production is "Maleficent" featuring Angelina Jolie as the witch, telling the story of "Sleeping Beauty" from her point of view. The new movie, "Into the Woods" is another one. The difference is that it is an adaptation of a musical. "Into the Woods" is ambitious in that it seeks to combine together several famous Brothers Grimm's tales, viz., Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. The end product is marvellous! The audience goes with the protagonists (the Baker and his wife) on their exciting, humorous and lively journey! When it appears that all the wishes of the characters have come true, the twist takes place. In the second half of the movie, the tone becomes somber. Vengeance, seduction, grief, blame and guilt pop up. The prince is brought up to be "charming", but not "sincere". Cinderella does not fit in with the life at the palace. Luckily, Cinderella is strong-minded. Most importantly, the movie is from Disney's and as one may expect, it finishes on a positive note. At the end of the day, the characters pull themselves together and embark on a new life. When I left the cinema, it was already sunset. I sincerely wish the Baker, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack "lived happily ever after." Rating: **** (out of five) |
