Arsenal score six but RVP, Bendtner and Arshavin get no goal

By Myles Palmer

Everybody was surprised to see Arsenal thrashing Everton 6-1 at Goodison.

Wonderful day for Vermaelen, good for him to get game-time in harness with Gallas, and great to have a left footed centreback giving balance to the defensive unit.

Vermaelen's positioning and anticipation are good. That's vital because Wenger does not teach defence. The Belgian could become a solid defender for Arsenal.

In truth, this very strange event was two games.

A competitive game before the first goal  in 26 minutes, a walkover after Denilson scored.

The opening period showed that 4-3-3 does not suit Arsenal's players. For 26 minutes Arshavin was lost and wasted on the left, van Persie never went in the box, where Bendtener couldn't be because he was stuck on the right side, where he did OK because he's a decent footballer

Denilson isn't much cop going forward. He's a reliable continuity player, not a  creative player. Going forward, he was clueless in the first 25. Most of his passes were backwards and sideways. 4-3-3 does not suit him either, to be fair.

Then Bendtner worked it square to Fabregas, he went square again, and the Brazilian fired a bending shot beyond Tim Howard's dive.

After that, Everton were a shambles. The next five goals were all sucker punches. Everton had no midfield, a static defence, and no attack till Saha came on to score an injury time consolation when they were 6-0 down. Before that languid Brazilian Jo showed nothing except why Man City don't want him. He is on loan from City again this season.

Eboue came on and dribbled into a crowd of Everton players. You thought : Why is Wilshere not on the bench?Because, Wenger says, I can't play him because the team is too young. Jack's not too young but the team is too young, so he can't be in it. The manager would rather play an ignoramus like Eboue or a cretin like Diaby.

Skipper Fabregas had two goals and two assists, RVP had two assists, and sub Eduardo came on to knock in a rebound when Arshavin's late toe-poke came back off the post. Worth mentioning : Song had a good game.

Everton have rebuffed persistent Man City attempts to acquire Joleon Lescott by bidding high and higher, offering to double Lescott’s wages.

All summer chairman Bill Kenwright and manager David Moyes have stood firm and said nobody would be sold by the club that finished fifth in 2008 and 2009.

Having failed to get Chelsea skipper John Terry in a saga that was the biggest bore of the summer, City are desperate to sign their second choice, Lescott. But City have not been in touch with Moyes, who has forced Lescott to ask for a transfer, which he has refused.

On Friday, Moyes said “All this talk has disrupted us and twisted Joleon’s mind. Maybe it was always their intention to do that to one of their closest rivals.”

Did the whole Everton team sympathise with Lescott? Did each player think: if that was me, I'd want to go and double my money? Does old-fashioned team spirit really exist among a band of mercenaries?

On Friday we heard that Lescott might not even play against Arsenal because he would sign for Man City on Saturday morning.

However, we are outside the deal. We do not know the true facts. We do not know the parameters of the negotiation. Everton might argue that Lescott is younger than John Terry and scores more goals. The bottom line could be : We want £30million for him.

Three conclusions :

First, it was a very strange weekend on which Everton, Aston Villa and Liverpool did not turn up.They did not look ready for the start of the season.

Second, 4-3-3 wastes Arshavin and does not suit RVP or NB. It's a radical change and it might improve by 1% every week.

Third, looking at the other 9 games, Arsenal have an opportunity this season because their rivals are weaker.

Man United are much weaker without Cristiano, Chelsea are weaker without Guus Hiddink, and Liverpool, beaten 2-1 at Spurs, now have a hole in the middle of their team  the size of the Grand Canyon.

Liverpool will miss Xabi Alonso almost as much as Arsenal missed Patrick Vieira.

Aquilani cannot fill that hole.

We all knew Xabi Alonso was an exceptional player. I said that a year ago when Arsenal tried to sign him for £12 million. But we later realised that Rafa was never going to sell Xabi to Arsenal.

David Moyes was a centre half for Celtic in 1983 before he came to England to play for Cambridge United, Bristol City, Shrewsbury and Preston.

On the Celtic-Arsenal CLQ game,  Moyes says, "I don't know how Celtic will play or what they'll do but I don't fear the worst for them. I think they'll do better than us, that's for sure."

Wilshere and Szczesny give Arsenal far more authority and guts

By Myles Palmer

Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

Villa 26, Van Persie 78, Arshavin 83

____________________________

The key player in the Nou Camp will be Szczesny.

So pray that nothing happens to Arsenal’s goalkeeper between now and Tuesday, March 8th.

Barcelona’s style is cleverly-timed runs onto sharp little passes, which c reates a lot of one-on-one chances with the keeper.

Wojciech Szczesny’s fine positional judgement makes him a master of making opponents shoot into the side-netting or just past the post.

On the goal, he was a bit unlucky because David Villa, a razor finisher in these situations, slotted between his legs.

By contrast, he got lucky on the loose ball after his save, when the scrambling Messi headed in but was flagged offside. Messi wasn't offside.

For me, Szczesny was Arsenal’s best player last night for that reason. Making Messi miss was the name of the game.

Yes, Koscielny played his finest game in an Arsenal shirt.

Yes, Jack Wilshere played with remarkable authority at the heart of the team. England need to play Jack football, Fabio - not Capello football.

Yes, of course, CL knock-out ties are a game of four halves.

Arsenal lost the first half 1-0 and won the second half 2-0 and halves three and four will roll round 20 days from now.

Arsenal raised their tempo after half-time and the game turned on 68 when Keita and Arshavin came on.

Keita replaced Villa to stiffen Barca's midfield, which was running out of steam, and allowed young Busquets to go ball-hunting further up the field.

Arshavin’s arrival (for Song) allowed him to link in a cool manner with Clichy, who played a killer ball forward into the box with his right-foot and gave Van Persie a chance to hit a mighty left-foot shot on the half- volley inside the near post of Victor Valdes for 1-1.

Valdes has always had flaky moments. That blunder by allowed Arsenal back into a game that Barcelona were still playing mostly in Arsenal's half.

Still, defending deeper can be good. You can only counter-attack if your opponents are in your half of the field. You can attack too much in a game. If you attack less, you often score more.

Frankly, Fabregas, Eboue and Walcott had been crap.

All three played crap. Only a blinkered, badge-kissing nincompoop would say any of those three played well last night.

Arsenal had nothing on the right flank but now, suddenly, that was where the winning goal came from after a fabulous move.

The cool Koscielny picked up the ball in his penalty area, passed to Bendtner, who passed infield to Wilshere, then quickly forward to Fabregas, who instantly released Nasri with a superb ball down the right flank.

Nasri could have tried the obvious with a low cross to the far post but chose instead to play a lovely pass which allowed Arshavin to curl his sidefoot shot behind Abidal and into the net from 15 yards.

That quality goal gave Arsenal their first victory against Barcelona and it set the seal on the pulsating, rocking, thrilling night that the Emirates has needed since 2006.

Sporting Gijon was a factor last night because game was much harder than the Wolves game was for Arsenal .

After two and half years of staggering success, and intensifying pressure, Barcelona are showing signs of burn-out, so Pep has to husband his resources very carefully.

Coming back off an international break, which is mostly where Barcelona d rop their points, he conceded an early goal at Gijon in a game that was very passionate, intense and physical, since Gijon are fighting for their lives just above the drop-zone.

I was really enjoying the game but as the second half went on I was thinking : This is taking a lot out of Barcelona !

Indeed, it was a helluva battle that was taking a lot out of both sides.

Just as the commentators began to say that David Villa was about to be taken off, he glided onto a wonder-pass from Messi and chipped the keeper from the edge of the box and it finished 1-1.

Success brings a heavy schedule.

The more games you win, the more the pressure is on you. To handle that you need character and guts. Wilshere and Szczesny have given the team a lot more personality and authority than it had last year.

Big characters, big difference.

As Rufus Thomas said, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
