man united vs arsenal : 1715 hr uk time 29 aug

It's the 1st big match between Big 4 this season .. Man united was lost to Burnley and cannot say they are at top form .. w/out
Cristiano Ronaldo , they badly need a good form Rooney in time.

Arsenal is still awaiting Cesc whether he is fully fit for tomo clash.. Andrey Arshavin scored in the mid-week against Celtic and the other players are confident due to recent good start of the season.

The match will be much more closer than last season when they played in Champion league's semi final and if Arsenal can get some luck (which they just got a very very lucky draw in Champion League) then they may beat Man United this time .

I can't wait.. from now on till tomorrow midnight kick off time is a very longest time ...hold your breathe and I certainly will scream in very late night when/if Arshavin or Cesc score the winning goal tomo!!!

Vermaelen will be tested by Rooney & Berbatov

By Myles Palmer

He was gutted when that goal went in.

Arsenal were 5-0 up in aggregate against Celtic in injury time and Thomas Vermaelen threw his body at a shot by Scott McDonald, just as Steve Bould, Lee Dixon and Tony Adams used to do. Just as Nigel Winterburn used to do.

The ball hit Vermaelen and rebounded to a Celtic player who crossed beyond the far post and an Italian scored a late consolation goal with a volley across a Spaniard that went in off the post.

As Donati's shot went in, Vermaelen threw his arms up in despair. His legs buckled. He was so disappointed. His face expressed real pain.

Body language tells me more than quotes tell me. Vermaelen's body language said it all. That irrelevant goal was not irrelevant to him because a true defender takes pride in keeping a clean sheet. That's his job. That's his raison d'etre.

To guys like him, success is walking off the field having conceded nil. In that, he's like Martin Keown. He takes pride in what he's doing.

Last season, being impressed by Kompany and Fellaini, I said that Wenger should sign a couple big Belgians.

He signed Vermaelen for £10m which might be £8m plus add-ons.

The Belgian has made a difference. He has revived Gallas, who is playing like a 23-year old. Sagna has improved too.

Now Vermaelen can test himself against Rooney and Berbatov.

So that's how I view this game : It's Gallas and Vermaelen against Rooney and Berbatov at 5.15 and it's the first game of the season. It's the 29th day of August and the first game is worth 10 points.

If Arsenal win, it's worth ten points in confidence. But if they get battered it will cost them 10 points in confidence.

Right now, Wayne Rooney is fit and buzzing and full of bright ideas. He's in the middle and leading the charge.

He once said, "I think of myself as a centre forward." Personally, I thought of Rooney as a No.10 who could do a bit of everything. Lately, post-Cristiano, he has been narrower, further forward, more specialised. And he's worked on his heading.

Vermaelen says, "We will see how it goes against him. It will be my first time playing against Wayne Rooney but I am not nervous. You have to look forward to playing these kind of games and against players like him. For me it is nice to play against United. They are a good team. They sold Cristiano Ronaldo but they still have very good players. When I saw them last year, they played very well as a team and that is very important.

"In Arsenal, if you play in the Premier League every game is a hard game. In Holland sometimes you had a game at home and it was easy. But here you have to fight hard in every game and you look forward to each match but Saturday is a special game.

"Manchester United is the biggest game of the season for us and it will be a good test for us. It is a difficult game. We have played on Wednesday and they have had a free week. It's just the start but there are a lot of games to come for me and for Arsenal. The team is helping me to adapt here and I think it is going well so far.

"It is too early to say how well we will do. We have had a good start but the most difficult thing is to maintain the start we have made in these four games."

FABREGAS has a fitness test today.

If he fails it, Wenger won't play 4-3-3 and he might not play 4-3-3 anyway. If Cristiano was still there, definitely wouldn't dare to play 4-3-1 at Old Trafford.

If Sir Alex is worried about Arshavin on the left, he will deploy O'Shea and Fletcher on that side. Or O'Shea and Park.

Berbatov now has to prove that Sir Alex was right to spend £31.5 million on him. He has to show he's not a luxury flop like Veron.

Getting in the box far more, getting his feet trampled on, flicking the ball with bodies round him, Berbatov is trying to supply artistry in the combat zone.

I'm really looking forward to the game. Sometimes these clashes seem to come too early. But this old beatnik is up for this one. Bring it on ! Let's see how good Arsenal are. Let's find out how good Man United are without the one-man army we called Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wilshere and Szczesny give Arsenal far more authority and guts

By Myles Palmer

Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

Villa 26, Van Persie 78, Arshavin 83

____________________________

The key player in the Nou Camp will be Szczesny.

So pray that nothing happens to Arsenal’s goalkeeper between now and Tuesday, March 8th.

Barcelona’s style is cleverly-timed runs onto sharp little passes, which c reates a lot of one-on-one chances with the keeper.

Wojciech Szczesny’s fine positional judgement makes him a master of making opponents shoot into the side-netting or just past the post.

On the goal, he was a bit unlucky because David Villa, a razor finisher in these situations, slotted between his legs.

By contrast, he got lucky on the loose ball after his save, when the scrambling Messi headed in but was flagged offside. Messi wasn't offside.

For me, Szczesny was Arsenal’s best player last night for that reason. Making Messi miss was the name of the game.

Yes, Koscielny played his finest game in an Arsenal shirt.

Yes, Jack Wilshere played with remarkable authority at the heart of the team. England need to play Jack football, Fabio - not Capello football.

Yes, of course, CL knock-out ties are a game of four halves.

Arsenal lost the first half 1-0 and won the second half 2-0 and halves three and four will roll round 20 days from now.

Arsenal raised their tempo after half-time and the game turned on 68 when Keita and Arshavin came on.

Keita replaced Villa to stiffen Barca's midfield, which was running out of steam, and allowed young Busquets to go ball-hunting further up the field.

Arshavin’s arrival (for Song) allowed him to link in a cool manner with Clichy, who played a killer ball forward into the box with his right-foot and gave Van Persie a chance to hit a mighty left-foot shot on the half- volley inside the near post of Victor Valdes for 1-1.

Valdes has always had flaky moments. That blunder by allowed Arsenal back into a game that Barcelona were still playing mostly in Arsenal's half.

Still, defending deeper can be good. You can only counter-attack if your opponents are in your half of the field. You can attack too much in a game. If you attack less, you often score more.

Frankly, Fabregas, Eboue and Walcott had been crap.

All three played crap. Only a blinkered, badge-kissing nincompoop would say any of those three played well last night.

Arsenal had nothing on the right flank but now, suddenly, that was where the winning goal came from after a fabulous move.

The cool Koscielny picked up the ball in his penalty area, passed to Bendtner, who passed infield to Wilshere, then quickly forward to Fabregas, who instantly released Nasri with a superb ball down the right flank.

Nasri could have tried the obvious with a low cross to the far post but chose instead to play a lovely pass which allowed Arshavin to curl his sidefoot shot behind Abidal and into the net from 15 yards.

That quality goal gave Arsenal their first victory against Barcelona and it set the seal on the pulsating, rocking, thrilling night that the Emirates has needed since 2006.

Sporting Gijon was a factor last night because game was much harder than the Wolves game was for Arsenal .

After two and half years of staggering success, and intensifying pressure, Barcelona are showing signs of burn-out, so Pep has to husband his resources very carefully.

Coming back off an international break, which is mostly where Barcelona d rop their points, he conceded an early goal at Gijon in a game that was very passionate, intense and physical, since Gijon are fighting for their lives just above the drop-zone.

I was really enjoying the game but as the second half went on I was thinking : This is taking a lot out of Barcelona !

Indeed, it was a helluva battle that was taking a lot out of both sides.

Just as the commentators began to say that David Villa was about to be taken off, he glided onto a wonder-pass from Messi and chipped the keeper from the edge of the box and it finished 1-1.

Success brings a heavy schedule.

The more games you win, the more the pressure is on you. To handle that you need character and guts. Wilshere and Szczesny have given the team a lot more personality and authority than it had last year.

Big characters, big difference.

As Rufus Thomas said, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
