4.AZ Alkmaar2011121

It will be a low score game as Rosicky and Walcott will be out so I reckon only Arshavin and Van Persie will lead the frontline.. If the scoreline to be 1-0 or 2-0 to Arsenal , then i will be happy . 3 points is the most important. Carlos Vela may start if the formation maintain 4-3-3 but the squard probable asf:

Alumunia , Sagna , Vermaelen , Gallas , Clichy , Song , Fabregas , Diaby , Vela , Arshavin , Van Persie.

Substitue : Mannone , Gibbs , Eboue , Silvestre , Merida , Wilshere , Ramsey

Expect big games from Vermaelen and Romero

By Myles Palmer

A few words today about Vermaelen and Romero.

One is a centreback, the other a goalkeeper.

When Vermaelen played in Liege, it was a landmark match for a defender who joined the Ajax academy when he was 15 and played his senior football in Holland.

Three weeks ago former Arsenal skipper Frank McLintock was quoted on Arsenal's new defender.

Coming from a passionate captain like McLintock, this was praise indeed. Frank said Thomas Vermaelen could be a great player for the Gunners if he maintains his current form. He told the Independent: “He's athletic, has a great spring, alive and alert, taking charge and telling other players about pushing up after the ball's cleared, and settled in from his very first game. If he can keep that up, he'll be a fantastic player for Arsenal. He's winning headers in the box both ends of the pitch, and that's been one of the failures.”

On Sunday, in Vermaelen's interview in the Independent, he admitted to Steve Tongue  that playing in his home country was a huge novelty.

"It was only the second time I've played in Belgium, which was special, and I knew they were a good team. We went two-nil down after four or five minutes but it was good that Nicklas scored just before half-time, because we knew in the half-time that we could score one or two more. Then against Olympiacos I think we played our best half of the season and knew the goals would come, though we had to wait."

Vermaelen is the only Arsenal player who is familiar with AZ Alkmaar:  "I played against them for the last few years and know them very well. They have a lot of Belgian players too. They will play as a team with great discipline, like they did last season under Louis van Gaal. They have good players up front like El Hamdaoui and the Belgian guy Dembele, but the real strength is as a team. I think they're going to be quite defensive."

Alkmaar's keeper is 22-year old Sergio Romero, who played in Argentina's last three World Cup qualifying games.

In other words, Romero is Diego Maradona's goalkeeper. To some people that might not be a recommendation.

Romero is six foot four, has very long hair and an older brother who plays professional basketball in Argentina. He kept 18 clean sheets in their title season but broke his hand by punching a wall after they lost a cup quarter-final against NAC Breda and missed the run-in.

Their stadium capacity is 17,000.They were undefeated in 32 European home games before losing 3-2 to Everton in the Uefa Cup in December 2007. Louis van Gaal guided Alkmaar to the title last season, then joined Bayern Munich.

New coach Ronaldo Koeman came over to watch Arsenal recently. As Ajax coach he outsmarted Wenger with a 1-1 at Highbury when Steven Pienaar and Nigel De Jong were playing. Before the second leg many Gooners said, "Playing at home, they'll have to come out." I said, "Why would they do that? A 0-0 will put them through."

You all know the score in that second leg : Ajax 0 Arsenal 0. It was so obvious. If I'd had an online account at the time, I'd have had a bet on that result. Koeman's PSV also beat Arsenal in 2007.

Alkmaar's president Dirk Scheringa is the owner of the DSB Bank, which was declared bankrupt yesterday. One story said the players were not paid last week.

Despite all that strife, don't rule out a draw. Keeper Romero might be a big player tonight. Vermaelen could be as big, or bigger.

LIVERPOOL have a very good record against French clubs but Lyon can score goals away from home. Torres is out, Gerrard plays.

BARCELONA host Russian champions Rubin Kazan, a lively outfit who might be overawed at the Nou Camp.

PS : Did you see The Last Word with Andy Gray?

I fast-forwarded through a recording because Peter Reid was the guest.

Andy put up a graphic which did not include Man City, Everton or Spurs.

But it was quite interesting

Wilshere and Szczesny give Arsenal far more authority and guts

By Myles Palmer

Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

Villa 26, Van Persie 78, Arshavin 83

The key player in the Nou Camp will be Szczesny.

So pray that nothing happens to Arsenal’s goalkeeper between now and Tuesday, March 8th.

Barcelona’s style is cleverly-timed runs onto sharp little passes, which c reates a lot of one-on-one chances with the keeper.

Wojciech Szczesny’s fine positional judgement makes him a master of making opponents shoot into the side-netting or just past the post.

On the goal, he was a bit unlucky because David Villa, a razor finisher in these situations, slotted between his legs.

By contrast, he got lucky on the loose ball after his save, when the scrambling Messi headed in but was flagged offside. Messi wasn't offside.

For me, Szczesny was Arsenal’s best player last night for that reason. Making Messi miss was the name of the game.

Yes, Koscielny played his finest game in an Arsenal shirt.

Yes, Jack Wilshere played with remarkable authority at the heart of the team. England need to play Jack football, Fabio - not Capello football.

Yes, of course, CL knock-out ties are a game of four halves.

Arsenal lost the first half 1-0 and won the second half 2-0 and halves three and four will roll round 20 days from now.

Arsenal raised their tempo after half-time and the game turned on 68 when Keita and Arshavin came on.

Keita replaced Villa to stiffen Barca's midfield, which was running out of steam, and allowed young Busquets to go ball-hunting further up the field.

Arshavin’s arrival (for Song) allowed him to link in a cool manner with Clichy, who played a killer ball forward into the box with his right-foot and gave Van Persie a chance to hit a mighty left-foot shot on the half- volley inside the near post of Victor Valdes for 1-1.

Valdes has always had flaky moments. That blunder by allowed Arsenal back into a game that Barcelona were still playing mostly in Arsenal's half.

Still, defending deeper can be good. You can only counter-attack if your opponents are in your half of the field. You can attack too much in a game. If you attack less, you often score more.

Frankly, Fabregas, Eboue and Walcott had been crap.

All three played crap. Only a blinkered, badge-kissing nincompoop would say any of those three played well last night.

Arsenal had nothing on the right flank but now, suddenly, that was where the winning goal came from after a fabulous move.

The cool Koscielny picked up the ball in his penalty area, passed to Bendtner, who passed infield to Wilshere, then quickly forward to Fabregas, who instantly released Nasri with a superb ball down the right flank.

Nasri could have tried the obvious with a low cross to the far post but chose instead to play a lovely pass which allowed Arshavin to curl his sidefoot shot behind Abidal and into the net from 15 yards.

That quality goal gave Arsenal their first victory against Barcelona and it set the seal on the pulsating, rocking, thrilling night that the Emirates has needed since 2006.

Sporting Gijon was a factor last night because game was much harder than the Wolves game was for Arsenal .

After two and half years of staggering success, and intensifying pressure, Barcelona are showing signs of burn-out, so Pep has to husband his resources very carefully.

Coming back off an international break, which is mostly where Barcelona d rop their points, he conceded an early goal at Gijon in a game that was very passionate, intense and physical, since Gijon are fighting for their lives just above the drop-zone.

I was really enjoying the game but as the second half went on I was thinking : This is taking a lot out of Barcelona !

Indeed, it was a helluva battle that was taking a lot out of both sides.

Just as the commentators began to say that David Villa was about to be taken off, he glided onto a wonder-pass from Messi and chipped the keeper from the edge of the box and it finished 1-1.

Success brings a heavy schedule.

The more games you win, the more the pressure is on you. To handle that you need character and guts. Wilshere and Szczesny have given the team a lot more personality and authority than it had last year.

Big characters, big difference.

As Rufus Thomas said, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
