Arsenal 3 Aston Villa 0

At last , some players improved a bit ... Almunia improved a bit and Walcott improved a bit too . They should know they don't deserve to get the present salary if they don't show up their quality to wear the jersey of Arsenal.

But there is only one Cesc Fabregas , one free kick and one fast  counter attack from middle third upto the final third in 10 seconds .

A long diagonal pass from Traoe to Walcott , and then a nice and neat short square pass from Walcott to Fabregas who shot in less than one second...the ball just was curling into the near post..

2-0 . Game over!!!

What more u can ask ? Captain Cesc played 26 mins on the pitch who wholly changed the tempo of the game and 3 points was decided in those 26 mins.

Not sure how severe of his injury after 2nd goal but we can only wait for further news .. and lets keep working hard and get another 3 points on wednesday .. Next up , away at Portsmouth.

Martin O'Neill bottled it, Fabregas gave him what he deserved

By Myles Palmer

Arsenal 3 Aston Villa 0

Fabregas 65, Fabregas 81, Diaby 91

Martin O'Neill bottled it.

And Arsenal played their best second half of this season.

Let's face it, Aston Villa are still a team of journeymen who have been having a good run of results. As always, O'Neill was too cautious.

The best way to beat Arsenal is to hustle and press and deny them the ball, as Phil Brown and Roy Hodgson have shown.
But Villa went to the Emirates and did what teams should never do : they let the home team have the ball and find their rhythm. Even so, Arsenal were very poor without Fabregas or a striker in the first half. Eduardo and Nasri were passengers and it was 0-0 at the interval.

Before the game I thought Fabregas would start whether he was fit or not. That was wrong. At half-time I thought Fabregas would come on and make a goal and Arsenal would win 1-0. That was wrong too.

Diaby had c reated an early chance for Eduardo, who scuffed his shot straight at Brad Friedel.

Second half, Ashley Young looked a certainty to hit a left wing corner into Almunia's hands. And he did exactly that. But Almunia punched it with nobody near him, nobody within five yards of him. You catch those, every time !

Then Fabregas came on in 57 minutes and won a free-kick off Richard Dunn, took it himself, whipped the ball over the wall, flat and hard, beating Friedel for 1-0.

When Traore found Walcott with a long diagonal ball, the kid at last did something right. His control was flawless, his second touch a perfect pass into the sprinting Fabregas, who slotted coolly for 2-0. But Cesc had done his hamstring and had to limp off after a masterful 27-minute cameo

Then the outstanding Diaby supplied the coup de grace. Advancing from the centre circle as Villa backed off, Diaby scored a Dennis Bergkamp goal, using Cuelar as a shield to prevent Friedel seeing the shot he curled into the bottom corner from the edge of the box for 3-0.

Martin O’Neill said it wasn’t a 3-0 but it was. Because Agbonlahor stunk, Ashley Young was hopeless, Downing mediocre, Milner anonymous, Heskey a dumpling, Villa never supported their attacks with runs from midfield.

How did they beat Man United? How did they beat Chelsea at Villa Park? Winning at Liverpool was no shock, since Liverpool are dire this season. It’s a disgrace for Rafa to inject Torres and play him when he's half-fit.

At 25, Torres in his prime but right now he is only 35% of what he can be. It’s horrible to watch. Come on Rafa, get real ! Let him have his hernia operation now.

The Midlands is big enough to provide one top Premier League team and it should be Aston Villa.

They have a heritage and Randy Lerner is a good owner but Martin O'Neill has no bottle.

He’s 57 and going nowhere because his team are so negative! He had his best side out but he turned out to be just another dreary survivalist whose tactics gave his team an inferiority complex. Having been stuffed 3-0, they will now be convinced that they ARE inferior.

Aston Villa never looked like beating Arsenal. Not for 10 seconds did they look like beating Arsenal. They spent half the game defending the penalty spot ! Defending the 12-yard line! How ridiculous is that? They don’t deserve to be Top Four. Fulham play smarter football and have more belief. Brian Clough would have been ashamed of O’Neill on Sunday.

It’s been a hectic Xmas period with some close games, lots of draws, and several lively battles like Hull 1 Man United 3.

So many matches, but, in truth, little has changed. Arsenal are still third and still have a game in hand.

In a few hours time, the whole Sky-hyped EPL circus enters another decade. Football is the only thing that sells dishes, sells subscriptions, sells newspapers, sells gambling websites. Rupert Murdoch bought football in 1992 and he kept buying it for higher prices and the game became 100% showbiz. Most players are tarts.

However, absurd as the 24/7 blitz of football has became, as ridiculous as many of its personalities are, the Premier League can never implode because Murdoch won't let it implode. Too much of his profits depends on football.

If I'm still doing ANR in a year's time, I'll be doing it on morphine.

hi persie , you are right.. it's a convincing win although the 1st goal was lucky.. Anyway ,that's the difference between one chasing the title and one struggling in the bottom of the table..

Lets hope all those injured players can come back asap and those healthy players keep healthy and fit .. this year I feel we really have a great chance to catch up Chelsea and Man United !!

Magical Cesc. I hope his teammates will be able to win the next game without the captain on the pitch.

Wilshere and Szczesny give Arsenal far more authority and guts

By Myles Palmer

Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

Villa 26, Van Persie 78, Arshavin 83

____________________________

The key player in the Nou Camp will be Szczesny.

So pray that nothing happens to Arsenal’s goalkeeper between now and Tuesday, March 8th.

Barcelona’s style is cleverly-timed runs onto sharp little passes, which c reates a lot of one-on-one chances with the keeper.

Wojciech Szczesny’s fine positional judgement makes him a master of making opponents shoot into the side-netting or just past the post.

On the goal, he was a bit unlucky because David Villa, a razor finisher in these situations, slotted between his legs.

By contrast, he got lucky on the loose ball after his save, when the scrambling Messi headed in but was flagged offside. Messi wasn't offside.

For me, Szczesny was Arsenal’s best player last night for that reason. Making Messi miss was the name of the game.

Yes, Koscielny played his finest game in an Arsenal shirt.

Yes, Jack Wilshere played with remarkable authority at the heart of the team. England need to play Jack football, Fabio - not Capello football.

Yes, of course, CL knock-out ties are a game of four halves.

Arsenal lost the first half 1-0 and won the second half 2-0 and halves three and four will roll round 20 days from now.

Arsenal raised their tempo after half-time and the game turned on 68 when Keita and Arshavin came on.

Keita replaced Villa to stiffen Barca's midfield, which was running out of steam, and allowed young Busquets to go ball-hunting further up the field.

Arshavin’s arrival (for Song) allowed him to link in a cool manner with Clichy, who played a killer ball forward into the box with his right-foot and gave Van Persie a chance to hit a mighty left-foot shot on the half- volley inside the near post of Victor Valdes for 1-1.

Valdes has always had flaky moments. That blunder by allowed Arsenal back into a game that Barcelona were still playing mostly in Arsenal's half.

Still, defending deeper can be good. You can only counter-attack if your opponents are in your half of the field. You can attack too much in a game. If you attack less, you often score more.

Frankly, Fabregas, Eboue and Walcott had been crap.

All three played crap. Only a blinkered, badge-kissing nincompoop would say any of those three played well last night.

Arsenal had nothing on the right flank but now, suddenly, that was where the winning goal came from after a fabulous move.

The cool Koscielny picked up the ball in his penalty area, passed to Bendtner, who passed infield to Wilshere, then quickly forward to Fabregas, who instantly released Nasri with a superb ball down the right flank.

Nasri could have tried the obvious with a low cross to the far post but chose instead to play a lovely pass which allowed Arshavin to curl his sidefoot shot behind Abidal and into the net from 15 yards.

That quality goal gave Arsenal their first victory against Barcelona and it set the seal on the pulsating, rocking, thrilling night that the Emirates has needed since 2006.

Sporting Gijon was a factor last night because game was much harder than the Wolves game was for Arsenal .

After two and half years of staggering success, and intensifying pressure, Barcelona are showing signs of burn-out, so Pep has to husband his resources very carefully.

Coming back off an international break, which is mostly where Barcelona d rop their points, he conceded an early goal at Gijon in a game that was very passionate, intense and physical, since Gijon are fighting for their lives just above the drop-zone.

I was really enjoying the game but as the second half went on I was thinking : This is taking a lot out of Barcelona !

Indeed, it was a helluva battle that was taking a lot out of both sides.

Just as the commentators began to say that David Villa was about to be taken off, he glided onto a wonder-pass from Messi and chipped the keeper from the edge of the box and it finished 1-1.

Success brings a heavy schedule.

The more games you win, the more the pressure is on you. To handle that you need character and guts. Wilshere and Szczesny have given the team a lot more personality and authority than it had last year.

Big characters, big difference.

As Rufus Thomas said, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
