Arsenal 4 Bolton 2
Cahill 7, Taylor (pen) 28, Rosicky 43, Fabregas 52, Vermaelen 65, Arshavin 85
As promised, Arsenal won and went top on goal difference.
22 games played with 15 won and 4 defeats equals 48 points.
Five-a-side football produced four goals against Bolton, who had gone 2-0 up in 28 minutes.
Clichy and Denilson came back into the team and each made a bad mistake which cost a goal.
Clichy miskicked a clearance to Kevin Davies who knocked down for Gary Cahill to score with a left foot volley, and Denilson made an amateurish lunge inside the box to bring down winger Lee. The ball wasn't within tackling range. An awful tackle in the centre circle, let alone in the box. Matt Taylor hit the penalty low to Almunia’s left to give Bolton a 2-0 lead.
Then Fabregas gave Rosicky a pass near the box and Rosicky hit a wicked shot just inside the post that, bizarrely, Jaaskelainen wasn’t covering.
Second half, Fabregas nutmegged the keeper after a shocking foul by Gallas on midfielder Mark Davies. Gallas made a bad pass which went to Davies, then rammed his studs into the guy's ankle. It was a yellow card at least but Alan Wiley waved play on and Fabregas scored. Big clubs get all the decisions, especially when Wiley is around. Davies left the pitch on a stretcher and left the Emirates on crutches.
When Arsenal got a corner, Diaby won the second ball, knocking it down to Vermaelen, who hit a very slick Robbie Fowler shot for 3-2. Then Arshavin scored the goal that put Arsenal top of the table.
Since November 29, they've made up a remarkable 11 points on Chelsea, who now have a game in hand.
VERDICT : A short-passing style produced four goals against a relegation team. Arsenal play swarm football, flowing forward in a tight, narrow, busy group of co-workers, and that style means Fabregas gets more touches and scores more goals than he has done since Flamini left.
To put it more simply, Arsenal play from Fabregas and to Fabregas and it's working well at the moment.
Emile Heskey scored his annual goal for Aston Villa in a 6-4 defeat of Blackburn's 10 men to take them to the Carling Cup Final.
Ashley Young, the snarling arm-waver, was restored to the left wing during the game and scored the last goal in injury time. Maybe he will start to play well now.
At Anfield a feeble Spurs side were beaten 2-0 by a surprisingly vibrant Liverpool.
The league's most clumsy right winger, Dirk Kuyt, was played at centre forward and his first goal was a fine centre forward's strike after a nice assist by Aquillani. Kuyt hit the ball first time from the D into the bottom corner. Shearer couldn't have placed the shot any better. Kuyt's second goal was a twice-taken penalty late on.
In between, Defoe had a goal disallowed. It wasn't offside. A bad mistake by Reina. Big clubs get all the decisions at home. Has anybody seen an away side get a decision at a Big Four ground this season?
As Martin Tyler said, "That was a goal." Meaning : it was a fair goal, not a free-kick decision or a penalty shout.
Spurs lost 2-0 and will always be a Europa Cup outfit.
It's a shame. They used to be better than that under my old mate Keith Burkinshaw.
Good morning, Keith. I still love you.
