This is the match of the season ..it's Arsenal vs Man United ..it's Wenger vs Sir Alex ..

It's Emirates this time...can Vermaelen play on sunday ? Can Fabregas , Arshavin deliver on sunday ? Remember Arsenal scored the most goals in the whole premier league even w/out Van Persie so it's really not bad.

Remember if we beat Man United then we will go into the 2nd place and will keep chasing Chelsea , who will play Arsenal at home the next coming sunday.. If confidence grows after a winning match then we all know this is the most crucial game which will define their season ..can they challege the title after 2007-08 ? In that season we still have Hleb,Flamini while Rosicky was fit and healthy and they stumbled after the horror incident of Eduardo in feb 2008 .. Lets hope we can handle Man United this time as Fabregas plays like a man this season , Arshavin and Gallas are the figthers .. fighters need fight in the big game..and this is a BIG BIG game for them...I can't wait!!!

Let's see if Manchester United can measure Arsenal

By Myles Palmer

Sir Alex will not start Scholes and Giggs at the Emirates.

Against Man City. he went for experience.

Against Arsenal, he'll go for running power and bank on Valencia taking Clichy apart.

The line-ups will be something like this :

Arsenal (4-3-3): Almunia; Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen OR Campbell, Clichy; Denilson, Fabregas, Ramsey; Rosicky, Bendtner, Arshavin.

Manchester United (4-4-2): Van der Sar; Rafael, Brown, Evans OR Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Fletcher, Anderson, Park; Rooney, Berbatov.

What a relief that Vermaelen has NOT cracked his fibula.

He had scans on Thursday afternoon and there is no break.

That is crucial news. If Vermaelen could not play in the next 20 games....don't even think about it. Don't even go there.

Manchester United have lost four away games, drawn one.Their last league win at Arsenal was  in February 2005.

Arsenal have lost three away games, drawn three.

Those three draws are the main reason Arsenal are on 49 points, just below United on 50.

Spurs are fourth and 8 points behind Arsenal, having played the same number of games (23).

In any season, Sunday would be an opportunity for Arsenal. Now, on the last day of January 2010, it's a massive chance to beat Manchester United and show us that they can finish higher than third in this league.

Both teams played on Wednesday night. The Carling semi-final between United and City was the more high-profile encounter

United's 3-1 win showed that Roberto Mancini is a rookie manager here, someone who has a lot to learn about English football.

Going to Old Trafford 2-1 up, Mancini needed a more pro-active approach. Instead, he picked three defensive midfielders to protect his centrebacks, one of whom, Boyata, is a novice who miskicked several crucial balls. He should have brought on Adebayor and Ireland when the score was 1-0, not waited till it was 2-0.

City's team has changed a lot and Stevie Ireland is only in the bench. That's a real shame. His style would actually suit the present Man United team and he would blend beautifully with Berbatov. Because Carrick, Scholes, Anderson and Fletcher are not touch players who can scoot forward fast and often and score.

Mancini needs a pre-season with City. But if he doesn't finish above Spurs, he might not get it.

Looking at Manchester United,  their performance, even in that volatile atmosphere, was measured. That was my conclusion. It was professionally measured.

Like Liverpool in their pomp, Man United at their best became masters of minimalism, the art of doing just enough, and doing it when it mattered most, doing it when a game needs to be closed out, wrapped up, sealed and won.

Yes, United have lost that art. But not wholly. They are still, at times, a momentum team. And they are still, in crucial phases of an important game, a measured outfit who can get their noses in front and stay there. Those winning qualities are in the club's DNA.

Their battling 3-1 victory over a patchy Man City was a good performance.  A strong collective effort by a group of determined warriors who know how to measure and shape and sustain their collective effort. Starting the second leg 2-1 down, United scored in 51 through Scholes, scored again in 70 through Carrick, wobbled a bit when Tevez got a goal back five minutes later, and then Rooney headed the killer in injury time.

Sir Alex Ferguson is no snob. He doesn't look down on the Carling Cup. You saw Rooney and Fletcher celebrating after the final whistle. Their ecstatic faces said : We've done it, we're in the final !

Rio Ferdinand missed 19 games with a back injury, came back and elbowed a Hull striker. His three game ban has been made into four after the FA turned down his "frivolous appeal."

Sir Alex did that because he wanted to beat Man City so much. He now faces the swarming, short-passing style of Arsenal, who have scored a remarkable 34 league goals at home. United have played a game more at home and scored 31.

He will go with running power to control Arsenal's swarming midfield and nullify the goal threat of Fabregas and Arshavin. He thinks : If I do that, I can't lose.

He will pick Park on the left, Fletcher and Anderson in the middle, and use Valencia to take Clichy apart.  He played Nani for 90 against City because he wanted to save Valencia for Clichy.

However, Park and Anderson are just lungs and legs. They're not a good players and neither will score.

Rooney wants to be a Manchester United legend like Cantona, Best, Law, Charlton and Ryan Giggs.

The footballer he admires most is Giggs, who has played over 800 games for United in the last 20 years. Think about it : 800 games !

Rooney can't rack up 800 but he'll try. He is a scouse street footballer who has had to handle playing for England at 17 and fame and controversy and marriage and fatherhood and he’s now handling a massive role at the worlds biggest football club. He’s 24 and doing quite well, I think.

He has only scored 6 goals in 15 against Arsenal.

Sky's Tony Gale tips Man United to beat Arsenal, after co-commentating with Martin Tyler on Aston Villa 0 Arsenal 0.

Tony says, "I think they're missing that defensive midfield player."

hi persie. It's a game which Man United KO Arsenal..in less than 3 rounds.. No matter what excuse Wenger tried to make . It cannot change the fact.. We can only fight for the 3rd place .. and if we can get 3rd place in front of Man City . I will be very pleased..

I once knew of an Arsenal team who exposed other teams by their speed week after week.

Tonight I saw an Arsenal team being exposed of their lack of speed.  How ironic!

Denilson was so slow he couldn't even try to catch up and foul a Man United player.

It was a frustrating result but I think a lot of our players gave their best, like our central defenders and Song.  I am happy to see Song tried to shoot for 3 times.  Like Vermaelen's goal, we understand the important thing is to have the gut to try to shoot, and to be on target, and things can happen.

Are we over?  Are our chances over?  I kept thinking.

Wilshere and Szczesny give Arsenal far more authority and guts

By Myles Palmer

Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

Villa 26, Van Persie 78, Arshavin 83

____________________________

The key player in the Nou Camp will be Szczesny.

So pray that nothing happens to Arsenal’s goalkeeper between now and Tuesday, March 8th.

Barcelona’s style is cleverly-timed runs onto sharp little passes, which c reates a lot of one-on-one chances with the keeper.

Wojciech Szczesny’s fine positional judgement makes him a master of making opponents shoot into the side-netting or just past the post.

On the goal, he was a bit unlucky because David Villa, a razor finisher in these situations, slotted between his legs.

By contrast, he got lucky on the loose ball after his save, when the scrambling Messi headed in but was flagged offside. Messi wasn't offside.

For me, Szczesny was Arsenal’s best player last night for that reason. Making Messi miss was the name of the game.

Yes, Koscielny played his finest game in an Arsenal shirt.

Yes, Jack Wilshere played with remarkable authority at the heart of the team. England need to play Jack football, Fabio - not Capello football.

Yes, of course, CL knock-out ties are a game of four halves.

Arsenal lost the first half 1-0 and won the second half 2-0 and halves three and four will roll round 20 days from now.

Arsenal raised their tempo after half-time and the game turned on 68 when Keita and Arshavin came on.

Keita replaced Villa to stiffen Barca's midfield, which was running out of steam, and allowed young Busquets to go ball-hunting further up the field.

Arshavin’s arrival (for Song) allowed him to link in a cool manner with Clichy, who played a killer ball forward into the box with his right-foot and gave Van Persie a chance to hit a mighty left-foot shot on the half- volley inside the near post of Victor Valdes for 1-1.

Valdes has always had flaky moments. That blunder by allowed Arsenal back into a game that Barcelona were still playing mostly in Arsenal's half.

Still, defending deeper can be good. You can only counter-attack if your opponents are in your half of the field. You can attack too much in a game. If you attack less, you often score more.

Frankly, Fabregas, Eboue and Walcott had been crap.

All three played crap. Only a blinkered, badge-kissing nincompoop would say any of those three played well last night.

Arsenal had nothing on the right flank but now, suddenly, that was where the winning goal came from after a fabulous move.

The cool Koscielny picked up the ball in his penalty area, passed to Bendtner, who passed infield to Wilshere, then quickly forward to Fabregas, who instantly released Nasri with a superb ball down the right flank.

Nasri could have tried the obvious with a low cross to the far post but chose instead to play a lovely pass which allowed Arshavin to curl his sidefoot shot behind Abidal and into the net from 15 yards.

That quality goal gave Arsenal their first victory against Barcelona and it set the seal on the pulsating, rocking, thrilling night that the Emirates has needed since 2006.

Sporting Gijon was a factor last night because game was much harder than the Wolves game was for Arsenal .

After two and half years of staggering success, and intensifying pressure, Barcelona are showing signs of burn-out, so Pep has to husband his resources very carefully.

Coming back off an international break, which is mostly where Barcelona d rop their points, he conceded an early goal at Gijon in a game that was very passionate, intense and physical, since Gijon are fighting for their lives just above the drop-zone.

I was really enjoying the game but as the second half went on I was thinking : This is taking a lot out of Barcelona !

Indeed, it was a helluva battle that was taking a lot out of both sides.

Just as the commentators began to say that David Villa was about to be taken off, he glided onto a wonder-pass from Messi and chipped the keeper from the edge of the box and it finished 1-1.

Success brings a heavy schedule.

The more games you win, the more the pressure is on you. To handle that you need character and guts. Wilshere and Szczesny have given the team a lot more personality and authority than it had last year.

Big characters, big difference.

As Rufus Thomas said, age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
